Edward J. Kawtoski

LILLY — KAWTOWSKI – Edward J., Lilly, died Dec. 26, 2012, at home. Born Jan. 9, 1924, in Lilly, son of the late Frank and Frances (Urbaczewski) Kwiatkowski. Preceded in death by wife, Catherine (Gides) Kawtoski, on Oct. 11, 1969; son, Edward J. Jr., on  Dec. 23, 2002; brothers, Walter, Stanley and Frank; and sisters, Theresa Yingling, Veronica O’Cilka, Stella Barnish and Freda Repko. Survived by children, Francis (Susan), Center Valley; Thomas, Easton; Mary (Lou) Divido, Johnstown; Catherine (James) Reifer, Charlestown, W.Va.; Susan (Michael) Washko, Pottsville; and Richard, at home. He will be sadly missed by grandchildren, Tiffany (Christopher) Kawtoski-Bjelkstam, Lindsay (Steve) Ilyes, Amanda and Angela Kawtoski, Dr. Jessica (Jason) Hildabrand and Catherine and Alexis Washko; great-grandchildren, Harley Rose Bjelkstam, Shane and Joel Ilyes and Edward Joseph “E.J.”; daughter-in-law, Deborah Kawtoski; sister, Genevieve (James) George; and brother-in-law, Joseph Barnish; also sisters-in-law, Dorothy Zura and Teresa McVicker. Devoted father and grandfather, Army veteran and POW of World War II, he was captured at the Battle of the Bulge. He began working in local coal mining and retired as an agent with the American General Life Insurance Co. Ed was an avid golfer and bowler, and loved his Pirates and Steelers and playing Industrial League Baseball in his younger days. Member of American Legion and one-time member of Sokols and Lilly VFW. Also a member of Our Lady of the Alleghenies Church and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, St. Ann’s Council. Ed participated in the VA Golden Age Senior Olympic Games and volunteered at the VA Hospital and Home. Friends received from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Thomas F. Cloherty Funeral Home, Lilly, where vigil for the deceased will be held Sunday. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of the Alleghenies Chapel, Lilly, the Rev. Monsignor John R. Sasway, celebrant. Committal, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery, with military graveside rites by Lilly American Legion and Lilly VFW. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to St. Vincent de Paul Society, Knights of Columbus or Disabled American Veterans.
