John Zizan

LOWER YODER TOWNSHIP — ZIZAN – John, 87, Lower Yoder Township, passed away Feb. 17, 2013. Born July 13, 1925, in Wehrum, son of Charles and Mary (Woshinko) Zizak. Preceded in death by parents, and sisters, Ann Molchan,  Mary Pavlik,  Helen Maurer,  Julia Gaydos  and Agnes McCabe. John was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Survived by loving wife of 43 years, Donna (Piljay) Zizan; nieces and nephews, JoAnne Luberto, Edward, Ronald and Randall Maurer, Roger and Skip Pavlik, Janelle Willeman and Jeffrey McCabe; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. John was a graduate of Johnstown High School and Williamsport Technical College.  He was a retired employee of Bethlehem Steel Corp. from the engineering department, general office.  He was an Army veteran of World War II, where he received a Bronze Star Medal and was a POW for 100 days in Germany.  He participated in the European African Middle Eastern Theater of Operations.  He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, the Victory and American Campaign Medals and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars. John was a faithful member and curator of Christ the Saviour Cathedral. He also was a member of the cemetery committee, a former member of the ACRY and was active for many years in Cathedral and Educational Center functions. In the early 1980’s,  John surveyed the cathedral cemetery and established a recordkeeping system. He kept this position until his illness. John enjoyed bowling, traveling, especially to the beach, and he enjoyed time outdoors in the yard and on the deck at home which he built.  He loved children and enjoyed the many visits from the neighborhood children.  He had many talents that he enjoyed: Gardening, carpentry, woodworking and “jack of all trades” skills. He had taught and helped many family and friends and neighbors over the years. John’s faith and church were very important to him and he lived life accordingly.  He loved people and reached out to them in a kind and gentle manner always being there in their time of need. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Moskal-Reid Funeral Home, West End, where the Very Rev. Protopresbyter Frank P. Miloro will hold Panchida service at 7 p.m. Tuesday.  There will be a brief service at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, followed by funeral service at 10 a.m. at Christ the Saviour Cathedral. Committal, cathedral cemetery. A special thank you to the staff of Allegheny Lutheran Home who treated John with kindness and loving care.
