Charles Martin Glass

SOUTHMONT — GLASS – Charles Martin, 78, Southmont, died Feb. 5, 2012, at his residence. Born April 2, 1933, in Drexel Hill, son of the late Gerald Frederick and Maree (Easton) Glass. Survived by wife of 58 years, the former Dorothy Ryan; children, James, married to the former Karen Bulleit, Avon Lake, Ohio; Kathleen, married to Robert Gunther, Waynesboro, Va.; Patricia, married to Mark Leibfreid, Bedford; Judith, married to Michael Pannell, Northglenn, Colo.; Richard, married to the former Paula Schwarz, Heidelberg, Germany; and Margaret, married to Gregg Moore, King George, Va.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Charles graduated from Germantown Academy and received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Lehigh University, Class of 1955, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was a retired captain and company commander of the Army Reserve Unit 458, Engineering Battalion. Charles retired from Bethlehem Steel Corp., mechanical department, after 38 years of service, and he belonged to the Society of Professional Engineers. He served on the Southmont Borough Council for 16 years and served as president for 14 years. Charles was an assistant Scoutmaster and leader of Explorer Post 11; a board member of Johnstown Water Authority; member of Sunnehanna Country Club; and past Master of Johnstown Masonic Lodge 538. He served five years in mission work in response to Hurricane Katrina. Charles also was a member of Westmont Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon, elder, trustee and Sunday school teacher, and where funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, the Rev. Doug Stevens, officiating. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary Inc., West Hills, 921 Menoher Blvd., where Masonic service will be held Thursday evening. Interment, Grandview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Westmont Presbyterian Church, 601 Luzerne St., Johnstown, Pa. 15905, or Conemaugh Regional Hospice, 315 Locust St., Suite 5, Johnstown, Pa. 15901.
