PORTAGE — KOWALCZYK – Mary Katherine, 86, Portage, passed away Nov. 3, 2012, at Memorial Medical Center. Born Jan. 5, 1926, in Lilly, daughter of Joseph J. Sr. and Michalina (Kurek) Kolbrecki. Preceded in death by parents; husband, Walter J. Kowalczyk; brother, Joseph Kolbrecki Jr.; daughter-in-law, Theresa (Stawarz) Kowalczyk, wife of Richard Z.; brothers-in-law, Martin Oravecz and Samuel Albarano Sr.; nephew, Randall Mark Kolbrecki; and niece, Rose Marie Albarano. Survived by children, Regina M., wife of Kenneth Long, Woodbine, Md.; Raymond J. Kowalczyk, Portage; Ruth Ann, wife of Ronald Long, Ebensburg; Robert L. Kowalczyk, Portage; and Richard Z. Kowalczyk, Portage; grandchildren, Michael J. Long, and wife, Diana, and Kathryn Long; and great-granddaughter, Calista Long. Sister of Anna Oravecz, Camillus, N.Y., and Frances Albarano, Lilly. Also survived by sister-in-law, Helen Kolbrecki, Davidsonville, Md.; special niece, Michalina (Mickey) Meaker; special nephew and godchild, Samuel (Bucky) Albarano Jr.; and other nieces and nephews. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Society, Third Order of St. Francis, Eucharistic minister, church and ethnic choir member, longtime bingo volunteer and lifetime member and volunteer of the Portage Area Historical Society. She was an award winning quilter, who also enjoyed cooking Polish food, sewing, knitting, crocheting, bird watching and collecting cookbooks. She made a quilt and a handwritten recipe book for each child and grandchild. She was very proud of her Polish heritage. She also enjoyed playing the organ for family and friends. Friends received from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Serenko-Claar Funeral Home, PC, Portage. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Sacred Heart Church, Mountain Avenue, Father Joseph Janiszeski, TOR, celebrant. Entombment, Sacred Heart Mausoleum, Portage. Family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Portage Area Historical Society.
