Stuart E. Leman

PORTAGE — LEMAN – Stuart E., 60, Portage, passed away peacefully Nov. 11, 2012, at home surrounded by family and K-9 companion, Saydi, after a courageous battle with ALS. Born May 17, 1952, in Johnstown, son of  S. Emerson Leman Sr. and Margaret “Peg” (Smith) Leman. Preceded in death by parents; brother, S. Emerson “Bud” “Tanky” Leman Jr.; and brother-in-law, Don Campbell. Survived by loving wife, Loretta (Kowalczyk) Leman; sons, Justin, married to the former Kristina Glista; and Casey, married to the former Dr. Krista Kerch; and daughter, Carli Leman. Brother of Donetta L., wife of John Gilbert; and Paula Dell Campbell. Also survived by niece, Shawna Gilbert, and her son, Dylan; and nephews, Troy Gilbert; and  Bruce, Bryon and Brett Campbell. A 1970 graduate of Portage Area High School and attended Pennsylvania State University. As president of Leman Machine Co. Inc., he found it to be his duty to support the surrounding community. He was an active member of Pennsylvania School Board Association for 20 years, having served the Portage Area School Board as member and past officer, liaison to the Admiral Peary Vocational-Technical School Board, and also an instructor for Junior Achievement. He served as past treasurer and member of Portage Area Joint Recreation Commission and caretaker for Crichton-McCormick Park Pool, which was recently renamed the Stuart E. Leman Community Pool by the recreation commission. As a member of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish, his faith in the Lord was shown through his services as Eucharistic minister, lector, altar server, volunteer Eucharistic minister at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center and catechism instructor for the Catholic Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown. Having been an avid motorcycle enthusiast, he traveled throughout the country, attended several motorcycle rallies yearly and truly portrayed the slogan “Live to Ride and Ride to Live.” To spread his love to ride, he initiated the PennDOT Motorcycle Safety Program in Portage and served as the lead instructor for 20 years. He loved his country and was a lifetime member of NRA. Friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Serenko-Claar Funeral Home, PC, Portage. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, Mountain Avenue, Father Joseph Janiszeski, TOR, celebrant. Memorial contributions may be made to Western Pennsylvania Chapter, ALS Association, Windber Hospice or Crichton-McCormick Park.
