JOHNSTOWN — VARNISH – John Daniel, 68, Johnstown, died Oct. 7, 2012, at the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center, Altoona. Born Dec. 21, 1943, in Johnstown, son of John D. and Alice (Rafferty) Varnish. Preceded in death by parents; brother-in-law, John Lamb; and niece, Kimberly Varnish. Survived by sister, Sondra Lamb, Johnstown; brother, James, married to Sheila (Deneen), and brother, Robert, both of Johnstown; sister, Jackie, York; stepsons, Paul Coplin and Peter Montero; nephews, Robert Jr. (Bo), Jason Varnish (Julie) and Parrish; nieces, Janine Jones (Andy), Jessica Wingard (Boyd), Alicia Varnish and Allyson Frick; numerous great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins; and close friends, Tony, Rose, Barry and Dan. John has 20 years of military service. He served in Vietnam in the U.S. Marine Corps and the National Guard. John retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 30 years. He attended St. Nicholas Orthodox Church and enjoyed walks to McDonald's, breakfast at the Corner Coffee Shop with friends and family, attending the sporting events of his great-nieces and great-nephews, watching the Steelers and vacations in the Dominican Republic. Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at Frank Duca Funeral Home, Westmont Chapel, 1622 Menoher Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the James E. Zandt VA Medical Center, Altoona.
