Thomas Cristofes

HUMMELSTOWN — CHRISTOFES – Thomas “Chris,” 81, Hummelstown, passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Johnstown on April 21, 1931, son of the late James Samuel and Mary Elizabeth Petercak Christofes. Chris retired as the assistant to the auditor general and had worked under Gov. Robert P. Casey for the state of Pennsylvania. He also retired after 40 years of service as a command sergeant major from the U.S. Army Reserves, having served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.  Chris was a certified public accountant; a former chemist for TRW; taught accounting at Elizabethtown College and Central Pennsylvania Business School, Summerdale; and volunteered with Meals on Wheels for over 20 years. He was a 1949 graduate of former Hershey Industrial School; graduated from former Hershey Junior College; and was a 1969 graduate of Penn State University.   Chris was a member and treasurer for eight years of Trinity United Methodist Church, Hummelstown.  He was past president of the Lower Dauphin School Board, serving as a board member for 12 years; charter member, past president and coach for the basketball program of the Fuzzy Few Organization Inc.; life member and past president of Hummelstown Area Historical Society; life member of American Legion Post 265; and a member of VFW Post 1687, all of Hummelstown.  An avid sports fan, Chris served as president of the Wrestling Booster Club of Lower Dauphin High School for 10 years.  He was an ardent fan of super heroes; enjoyed gardening, putting together puzzles and doing crosswords.  A humble man who did not look to draw attention to himself, Chris had a deep love for his family, friends and community. Chris is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Darlene K. Dimpsey Christofes, whom he married June 18, 1955; two sons, Thomas Christofes Jr., husband of Tracy Kling Christofes, Hummelstown, and Eryc Christofes, husband of Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” Crimmel Christofes, Grantville; one daughter, Apryl Howard, wife of Brian, Hummelstown; four grandchildren, Tara Love Christofes, Japan; Alexandrya Christofes, and her friend, John Walborn, Grantville; Demetrious Christofes, Grantville; and Dustyn Michael Christofes, partner of Tom Hill, Philadelphia; and his sister-in-law, Jill R. Dimpsey, partner of Cindy Baldwin, Mechanicsburg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Mathis Christofes; two brothers, James Christofes and Christos Christofes; and two sisters, Theodora Smith and Elizabeth Moose.  Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 210 W. Main St., Hummelstown, the Rev. Thomas A. Maurer, his pastor, and the Rev. Jody Silliker, pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, Harrisburg, officiating.  Interment with military honors will be in Hummelstown Cemetery.  Friends are invited to the viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home Inc., 114 W. Main St., Hummelstown, and Thursday in the church’s narthex from 10 a.m. until time of the service. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 210 W. Main St., Hummelstown, Pa.  17036; or Hummelstown Historical Society, 32 W.
