WESTMONT — GHANTOUS– Elias A., 89, Westmont, died Aug. 2, 2012. Born Sept. 9, 1923, in Amioun, Lebanon, son of the late Abdullah and Kafa (Salem) Ghantous. He also was preceded in death by brother, Malik Ghantous; sisters, Marianna Rizk and Adele Salem; and beloved granddaughter, Leslie Lynne Jackson. Elias is survived by his loving wife of 55 years whom he wed Feb. 3, 1957, the former Elizabeth (Betty) Salem; his children, Cay Lynne, married to Tom Jackson, and Albert, married to Mary Jo Yantus, both of Johnstown; grandchildren, Elias and Sean Jackson and Elias and Marissa Ghantous; great- grandchildren, Nathan and Dylan Jackson; sister, Mona Fares, and brother, Khalil Ghantous, both of Amioun, Lebanon; sister, Wadad Ayoub, Sydney, Australia; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins on three continents. Elias came to America in 1956 and married his bride a year later. Elias and his wife founded Elias Painting, operating it together for more than 38 years. His legacy continues with his son, Albert, and wife, Mary Jo, running the business now. Elias was often heard saying, “When God made America, he was smiling.” He was a member of Johnstown Elks Club and Johnstown Exchange Club. He was a faithful member of St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Church, where he sat on the board of directors and was instrumental in building the church at its current location. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary Inc., West Hills, 921 Menoher Blvd., where Trisagion prayers will be sung at 7 p.m. Service will begin with Trisagion prayers at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home before proceeding to his church, St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Church, for the funeral, the Very Rev. Father Donald E. Shadid officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mary Antiochian Special Projects Fund in Elias’ memory.
