Joseph W. Boes

JOHNSTOWN — BOES – Joseph W., 100, Johnstown, died Jan. 1, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center. Born Aug. 20, 1912, in Johnstown, son of Norbert A. and Mary (Schilling) Boes. Preceded in death by parents; sisters, Dorothy Gallagher, whose husband, Joseph, also is deceased; Louise Boes; Sister Pauline (Rosemary), a nun who served 75 years in the convent with the Sisters of Divine Providence; and Agnes Heidenthal, whose husband, James, also is deceased; and brothers, Norbert, whose wife, Madeline (Kist), also is deceased; and George, whose wife, Ruth (Kist), also is deceased. Survived by sisters, Imelda Schiffauer, who lives in Canfield, Ohio, with her husband, Richard; and Pauline, with whom he resided at the time of his death; and brothers, Raymond, married to Ruth Mahan; and Robert, married to Nancy Buck. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was a musician, having served as a music supervisor in the Lower Yoder Township School District for six years and as band and choral director in the John Carroll School District for 13 years. He also was an administrator in the Lower Yoder, John Carroll, Cambria Heights and Westmont Hilltop School Districts for 21 years. He retired from the Westmont Hilltop School District and was an administrative assistant in 1974. Joseph was a well-know tenor soloist, having participated at numerous musical functions in the Johnstown and Pittsburgh areas. For many years, he was organist and choir director in the Immaculate Conception and St. Benedict Catholic churches. He also directed the student nurses chorus at the former Mercy Hospital in Johnstown. He was a member of the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946, during World War II, having served in the European Theater of Operation. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home Inc., 710 Broad St., Johnstown, where vigil for the deceased will be held. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Resurrection Parish, Father Alan Thomas, officiating. Committal, Grandview Cemetery Mausoleum. Condolences can be sent to the family at ozogfh.com.
