Samuel Marc Hillard

WESTMONT — HILLARD – Samuel Marc “King Hillard,” 74, Westmont, died Jan. 30, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center. Born Aug. 29, 1938, in Jamestown, N.Y., son of the Rev. Archie and Jenatte (Smith) Hillard. Preceded in death by parents; stepbrothers, John; Russell; and William J., and wife, Rose Mary (Wilson); and nephew, Prvt. First Class William J. Hillard II. Survived by numerous nieces and nephews and friends. He was a 1957 graduate of Strong Vincent High School in Erie, and received a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Sam was a teacher at Westmont Hilltop School Jr. High and Middle School, social studies from 1961 to 1999. He was equipment manager; assistant junior high wrestling coach; middle school advisory team; junior high newspaper advisor; student government advisor; named to Who’s Who American Teacher of the Year 1990, 1994, 1996 and 1998; Pennsylvania Geography Teacher of the Year 1979; Tribune Person of the Week 1995; clock operator; ticket taker; game manager at various events; and helped with the band from 1990 to 2012. Westmont Band dedicated a new flagpole to Mr. Hillard in 1990. He received numerous awards of recognition of service for the district. Member of Westmont Fire Police and Westmont Zoning Board. Life member of BPOE 175. Former member of Westmont Church of the Brethren, having served on many church boards and Way Hope of Christian Fellowship. Despite his retirement, he continued to help with the band and many district events. Friends received from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Frank Duca Funeral Home, Westmont Chapel, 1622 Menoher Blvd., where funeral service will follow at 1:30 p.m. Interment, Grandview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Westmont Hilltop High School Band for Scholarships or Band Projects in Memory of Samuel M. Hillard, 200 Fair Oaks Drive, Johnstown, Pa. 15905.
