LITITZ, PA. — REIGHARD – Gary W., 78, Lititz, Pa., passed away Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in 1934, he was the son of Clyde and Pearl Reighard. Gary was the husband of Jacqueline Prosser Reighard, with whom he celebrated 57 years of marriage. A graduate of Conemaugh Valley High School, Gary earned his bachelor’s degree from California State College, a master’s degree from Temple University and his doctorate in counseling from the University of Maryland. He served as a rehabilitation therapist at Lebanon Veterans Hospital prior to joining the faculty at Millersville State College as associate professor of counseling and psychology. In 1969, Gary was appointed to the position of dean of students and in 1971 was named as the vice president for student affairs, retiring from that position in 1997, where he was granted the honorary status as VP Student Affairs – Emeritus. He and his wife, Jacqueline, were honored by the university when the student center multipurpose room was named in their honor and in 2005 a residence hall was named for his contributions to the university. Gary was known for his strong support of student life and activities on the Millersville University campus and for championing the rights and responsibilities of the student. During his tenure at Millersville University, Gary led many efforts that have greatly impacted the university, including the expansion of resident life opportunities for students, the development of gender equity in men’s and women’s athletics and the growth of athletic programs from Division III to Division II, the establishment of strong programs in support of wellness, the implementation of campus safety and security measures, and the initiation of the Women’s Center. Gary was instrumental in the creation of Student Services Inc. and Student Lodging Inc., organizations developed to enhance and enrich the student experience at Millersville University. Gary was a U.S. Army veteran who served during the Korean War. He was actively involved in numerous community organizations including Boy Scouts of America, United Way of Lancaster County, Lancaster County Health and Welfare Organization, Family and Children’s Services of Lancaster County, and Leadership Lancaster. In addition to his wife, Jacqueline, Gary is survived by son, Scott, and wife, Mindy, Lancaster; daughter, Amy, Charlotte, N.C.; granddaughters, Erica and Adrienne Reighard, both of Lancaster; grandson, Nicholas Beermann, Charlotte, N.C.; and sister, Kathy Seymour, and husband, John, State College.
