Russell J. Beyer

NEW GERMANY — BEYER – Russell J., 80, New Germany, died Oct. 24, 2012, at home surrounded by his loving family.  Born July 2, 1932, in Wilmore, son of Victor A. and Alberta T. (Smith) Beyer. Preceded in death by parents; infant daughter, Mary; and sister, Dorothy Trimble-Urick. Survived by loving wife of 53 years, Jean (Wyland) Beyer, whom he married July 18, 1959; eight children, Susie, wife of Ronald Bodenschatz; James, married to Linda Cronauer; Donna, wife of Darrell Dumm; Becky, wife of James Wehner; Jeff, married to Dr. Kelly Korber; and Daniel “Dee,” married to Amy Carpenter, all of New Germany; Attorney David L., married to Mary Petrunak, Ebensburg; and Judy, wife of Jeff Bedford, Harrisburg; 26 grandchildren; sisters, Helen Brown, Coudersport; Ruth Brown, Bedford; Lorraine Beyer and Ida Spaid, both of Portage; and Alma Rounds, Littleton, Colo.; brother, Father Leroy O. Beyer, New Germany; and numerous nieces, nephews and other beloved family.  Russell was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He retired as lead rigger from Bethlehem Steel Corp. in 1980 after 33 years of service.  Russell later retired from the USPS after 15 years as a rural route carrier and also worked for Smith Furniture, New Germany.  Member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, New Germany, where he served as an usher, catechist, lector and with the Cemetery Committee. Member of the VFW, Post 4963, Ebensburg, and the Summerhill GBU. Russell enjoyed playing cards, trips to casinos, watching the Pittsburgh Pirates and helping umpire and coach youth baseball. Friends will be received from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Friday at Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home Inc., South Fork, where vigil for the deceased will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, by, Father Leon Hunt, OSB, and Russell’s brother, Father Leroy O. Beyer. Committal, St. Mary’s Cemetery.  Military graveside service by St. Michael American Legion Post 551.  The family wishes to acknowledge with special thanks to Russell’s niece, Mary Gabany, and Conemaugh Regional Hospice, especially Diana Johns, for their care and support.
