Joseph P. Mohney

JOHNSTOWN — MOHNEY – Dr. Joseph P., 93, Johnstown, passed away peacefully Nov. 13, 2012, at home. Born Dec. 19, 1918, in Knox, Pa., son of the late Rev. Dr. Charles C. and Rozella (DeHaven) Mohney. Preceded in death by son, Paul Mohney, and five siblings. Survived by devoted and loving wife, Mary LaVerne (Mostoller) Mohney. Joe’s death ends a marriage union of 62 years. Also survived by daughter, Sue Lease, and husband, Bill; grandchildren, Erin and Shane Gavin; Nathan and John Mohney; and Jordann Lease, and wife, Shannon; great-grandchildren, Hudson and Willow Lease; daughter-in-law, Joanne Mohney; and numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was a 1940 graduate of Grove City College; volunteered and entered the naval service in 1942 at Midshipman School on the USS Prairie, commissioned as an ensign; and served on minesweepers during World War II in the Aleutians and Pacific, where he became captain of the YMS 396 and attained the rank of lieutenant commander. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Dental School in 1950. He returned to active duty in 1950 in the Navy Dental Corps and served during the Korean War at Patuxent Naval Air Test Center in Maryland. Joe entered private dental practice in 1953 in Morrellville and retired in 1985. He served as president of the Cambria County Dental Society and Seventh District Dental Society. We will always remember his witty sense of humor, compassionate love and never ending support of our hopes and dreams. He taught us all to live each day to the fullest; never hold grudges and always believe in ourselves. He loved playing golf and bridge and loved traveling. We will always remember him with much love and a smile on our faces. Dad, thank you for all the “dandelion days and firefly nights.” A special thanks to Conemaugh Regional Hospice for their loving care, especially Carolyn, Gene and Sara.
