Michael Matsko

SALIX — MATSKO – Michael, 91, formerly of Salix, died March 21, 2013, at Arbutus Park Manor. Born Aug. 10, 1921, in Windber, son of Andrew and Mary (Danchak) Matsko. Preceded in death by parents; wife, Leona (Margo) Matsko, who died Jan. 23, 2009; infant sister, Mary; sisters, Ann Matsko, Mary Malonek and Julia Sturey; brothers, Andrew, Paul, John and Pete Matsko; and son-in-law, Paul Bodenschatz. Survived by son, William, married to Judith Bowers, Indiana, Pa.; and daughter, Mary Jo, widow of Paul Bodenschatz, Geistown; grandchildren, Melissa (Bodenschatz), wife of Justin Roxby; and Matthew Bodenschatz, married to Rhiana Pettenati; great-grandchildren, Cameron and Payton Roxby and Mischa Bodenschatz; stepgrandchildren, Tammie Brunetta and Brian Mack; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Heather Readinger, Benjamin Brunetta, Jeffrey Mack and Kayla Mack; also sisters-in-law, Deloris (Cugini) Matsko, Johnstown; Shirlee A. (Yasenorsky) Matsko, Johnstown; and Christine Ross, Pelham, S.C. Michael was a 1939 graduate of Adams Township School and a 1950 graduate of Lock Haven University. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, having served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He worked in the coal mines for Berwind White and also for the steel mills. He taught health and physical education in Adams Township and Westmont school districts for a total of 32 years. Member of St. Michael Catholic Church, St. Michael, where he served as an usher and past council member. Life member of St. Michael American Legion Post 551, where he was a past commander and head of the Funeral Color Guard. Past president of South Fork Lions Club. Former school board member for Forest Hills School District. Life member of Dunlo Rod & Gun Club. Michael also helped organize the first Little League in St. Michael and to this day was still known as “Coach.” He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and bowling, but Michael’s greatest passion and love were his church and family. Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home Inc., South Fork, where vigil for the deceased will be held at 2:15 p.m. and South Fork Lions Club will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m. Sunday. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael Catholic Church by Father Charles F. Bodziak. Committal, St. Michael Cemetery.
