JOHNSTOWN — BAMBINO – Richard B. “Pappy” “Dick,” 82, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, March 21, 2013. Born Aug. 15, 1930, in Johnstown, son of Dominick and Helen (Goisovich) Bambino. Preceded in death by parents; sweet, loving wife, Dorothy Ann (Furnari) Bambino; brother, Thomas; and sister, Marilyn (Grunza). Survived by brothers, Donald and Robert F. Bambino; and sons, Dennis, married to Peggy (Birchard) Bambino; Robert V., married to Cindi (Yates) Bambino; Brian, married to Kim (Polca) Bambino; and Richard B. Jr., married to Dana (Hershberger) Bambino. He also had 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He served in the Air Force Military Police post World War II occupation in Germany. He worked for Bethlehem Steel, car shop division, where he achieved a Class A Millwright. He could fix anything and had an amazing mechanical mind. “Pappy” loved to hunt. When hunting season came, all other chores were put on hold until hunting season was over. He especially loved his hunting camp and the time spent there with his boys. “Pappy” taught hunter safety courses for many years to youngsters at St. Clair Trap & Field Club. Baseball was another passion.  He coached numerous teams throughout the Johnstown region. The highlight of his career came in 1974 when he coached Swank’s Hardware to the city title with a 20-5 record. The team then represented Johnstown in the AAABA tournament posting a one and two record. Many, many folks in this area remember Dick for his deep, beautifully rich bass singing voice. When he sang “Ava Maria” at wedding ceremonies even the priests cried. He loved barbershop a cappella-style singing and sang in multiple barbershop quartets. Dick was a member of SPEBQSA singing society for many years, hosting shows at Cochran auditorium and Vo-Tech auditorium to name a few. He was a man of deep, abiding faith who often pondered the mysteries of our God. He taught his family through word and deed how to love and serve and honor the Lord. He attended St. Therese Catholic Church every Sunday. Richard read his Bible so many times, the cover literally broke and fell off. Richard was a powerful presence in so many ways. He will be sadly missed, but always loved and remembered by many family and friends. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hindman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc., 146 Chandler Ave. A private funeral Mass will be held at St. Therese Catholic Church. Interment, St. Francis Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations be made to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Arrangements in care of Hindman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc., exclusive provider of “Veterans and Family Memorial Care.” Condolences may be made at HindmanFuneralHomes.com.
