James A. Kirsch

EBENSBURG — KIRSCH – James A., 91, Brick Road, Ebensburg, died Jan. 7, 2013, at home. Born  June 23, 1921, in Loretto R.D., son of the late Edwin J. and Philomena J. (Farabaugh) Kirsch.  Preceded  in death by wife, former Madeline “Toots” Kuntzman, Sept. 18, 1995; sister, Esther Park; and brothers, Paul and John. Survived by children, Doris A. Torakeo (David), Camp Hill; Joan M. Dietz (Mark), Bethel; Mary Uhler (John), Etowah, Tenn.; Janet M. Palya (Fred Paulsen), South Pasadina, Fla.; James T. (Linda Adams), Ebensburg R.D.; and Teresa A. Mullen (Francis), Ebensburg R.D.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sisters, Mary Jane Baker, Loretto R.D.; Teresa Ott, Pittsburgh; Edna Schirf, Duncansville; and Rita Born, Pittsburgh. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was a lifelong farmer. A World War II Army veteran, where he served as a sergeant in the 20th Tank Battalion and  was awarded the Distinguished Unit Badge, Army Occupational Medal (Germany), American Theater Ribbon and was wounded in Germany and received  two Purple Hearts. Life member of the Loretto American Legion Post 748 and Pennsylvania State Grange. Member of Cambria County Farm Bureau,  Pennsylvania Farm Association and Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Loretto, where funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, the Rev. Monsignor Timothy Swope, celebrant. Committal, church cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Gibbons Funeral Home, Ashville, where  a vigil service will be held Tuesday. Military rites in charge of Loretto American Legion and other local military organizations. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to St. Michael’s School in Jim’s memory.
