NEWTOWN — STUREY – Charles, 94, Newtown, died Jan. 30, 2013, at Maple Winds Care Center. Born May 4, 1918, in Windber, son of Anthony and Fannie (Zazulak) Sturey. Preceded in death by parents; wife, Elizabeth (Brkovich); brothers, John, Daniel, Steve and Michael; and sisters, Fay Oleksak and Mary Rzeszut. Survived by sons, Charles, Charleston, W.Va.; Nicholas, Newtown; and John (Lori Bowman), Windber; and grandchildren, Courtney, Ethan and Anthony Sturey. Brother of Nick (Theresa Schultz), Johnstown; Pete, Fallston, Md.; and Anna Conino, Maryland. Also survived by numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Member of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church and VFW. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II, as a sergeant in Co. G, 276th Infantry Unit, 70th Division, where he participated in the Naples-Foggia, Sicily, Rome-Arno, Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. After retiring from Bethlehem Steel Corp., Charles enjoyed spending time in his garden, riding his tractor and sitting on his swing. His real enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren, who affectionately called him Dide. Friends will be received noon to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Henderson-Makuchan Funeral Home, 434 First St., Conemaugh, where Parastas will be sung at noon Friday. Funeral service will begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and continue immediately at St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, the Very Rev. Archpriest George Johnson. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by Conemaugh Valley Detachment 287 Marine Corps League. In lieu of flowers, family suggests memorial contributions to St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church or The Duke Andrews Basketball League, c/o 153 Sherry Lane, P.O. Box 383, Elton, Pa. 15934.
