AKRON, OHIO — KURCHAK – Sam Edward, Akron, Ohio, died peacefully at home Nov. 19, 2012, after a short illness. Born Aug. 4, 1925, in Johnstown, to Edward and Mary (Bilanych) Kurchak, who preceded him in death. Also preceding him were brothers John, Michael, George and Metro; and son, George. Survived by brother, Tony, and sister, Helen Youchak, both of Johnstown; daughter, Georgann McGovern; and son, Rocky (wife, Kerry), Akron; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews. Sam was the sixth of seven children. After graduating from Johnstown High School in 1943, he left for California with three of his buddies, making it as far as Akron, Ohio, where he got a job through one of his friends. He started working at the B.F. Goodrich Co. and, as this was the time of World War II, he also worked at Seiberling Tire & Rubber Co. He retired from Goodrich in 1981 with 37 years of service, when his eyesight became too bad for him to continue working in the factory. He always held two jobs; for many years he tended bar at Akron area establishments, including Bailey Road Cafe, Oakwood Bar & Grill and Castel di Sangro. He loved gardening, dancing, music (especially jazz and polkas) and the news. Member of WKSU, WCPN and WVIZ. He donated annually to SS. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Johnstown, Foundation Fighting Blindness, Akron Children’s Hospital and UNICEF. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no calling hours. His remains will be interred in a family plot in Grandview Cemetery in Johnstown at a later date and a service will be held for the family at that time. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a favorite charity.
