Joseph P. McGinty

McGINTY – Joseph P., 86, lifelong resident of St. Michael, went home to God March 17, 2010, at Memorial Medical Center. Born Sept. 8, 1923, in St. Michael, son of John and Mary (O’Donnell) McGinty of Donegal, Ireland. Preceded in death by parents; brother, Jack, who went down with the USS Indianapolis during World War II; twin brother, Charles “Gene”; sisters, Maureen O’Donnell and  Kathleen “Kitty” Hansel; and brother, Alfred.  Survived by wife of 63 years, Alice (Huff)   McGinty, whom he married July 18, 1946; son, Joseph E., married to Connie Shockey, Salix; daughter, Bridget C., wife of Rickie Turner, Westmont; grandchildren, Melissa H. (Charles), wife of Michael Grose, Hollsopple; and Shawn P. McGinty, Pittsburgh; great-grandson, Tyler Harnish, Tampa, Fla.; brother, James, San Bernardino, Calif..; and too many special friends to list. Joe worked in the St. Michael coal mines, St. Michael company store, Wilson Candy Co. of Johnstown, Page Bedding of Johnstown and retired from Owens Illinois Glass Co. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served three and a half years with the 489th Anti-Aircraft Battalion and was wounded in France on Veterans Day, left lay and was wounded again the same day. He received two Purple Hearts, as well as other medals. Member of St. Michael American Legion Post 551 for 58 years, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Disabled American Veterans and Windber Moose Lodge. Joe loved to hunt, fish and go camping. He had been a camper at Camp Hartly, Bedford, for 51 years. Joe fulfilled a lifelong dream of going to Ireland with his daughter and granddaughter in August of 2003. It was a trip of a lifetime for him. He still has cousins, Celine Taylor, Charles and Eugene O’Donnell, living in Northern Ireland. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and from noon until time of service at 1 p.m. Saturday at Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home Inc., South Fork, by the Rev. Jimmie Schwartz. Military service by St. Michael American Legion Post 551. Family suggests memorial contributions to Disabled American Veterans.
