JOHNSTOWN —
Gov. Tom Corbett will tour Greenhouse Park this afternoon after paddling his way through the region this morning.
Dressed in a gray T-shirt, life vest and cargo shorts, Corbett kayaked from a launch point near Coopersdale alongside Route 403 to Seward with state and area officials. It was part of a three-day, mostly waterway tour of western Pennsylvania.
“This is a great example of how beautiful Pennsylvania can be,” said Corbett, after paddling through the scenic Conemaugh Gap.
Recent rains raised water levels to the point the mostly slow-moving section of the Conemaugh offered a few rapids, he said.
It also offered a view of a few bald eagles, he added.
Corbett is touring Greenhouse’s whitewater park at 2:30 p.m. before heading to the Pittsburgh area Wednesday to finish his three-day tour.
His wife, Susan, joined him on the trip.
“Preserving our natural resources for generations to come is critical to the growth of our commonwealth,” Corbett said, calling it a major shot in the arm for the state’s tourism industry.
Some area tourism and economic development leaders sought to bring Corbett to the area earlier this year in effort to tout recent area waterway improvements - and the tourism opportunities they are bringing.
Corbett toured eastern Pa. by kayak last year in a similar tour.
