JOHNSTOWN — Simon, Lions lose

in CFL West Final

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Greater Johnstown High School graduate Geroy Simon caught six passes for 56 yards, but the defending Grey Cup champion British Columbia Lions fell 34-29 to the visiting Calgary Stampeders on Sunday in the Canadian Football League’s West Division Final.

Simon, who is the CFL’s all-time career receiving yardage leader, had a long reception of 26 yards but couldn’t find the end zone against Calgary. The Stampeders (13-6) limited the Lions (13-6) to a pair of touchdowns and five field goals.

Simon, who appeared in his 16th career CFL playoff game, played a key role in a drive that pulled the Lions within 17-16 at halftime. On a second-and-1 play late in the opening half, short-yardage quarterback Mike Reilly found Simon for a 26-yard completion. Veteran quarterback Travis Lulay hit Simon again and running back Andrew Harris for another first down before the Stampeders defense stiffened and forced a field goal.

Calgary’s Kevin Glenn had three touchdown tosses, as the Stampeders booked their ticket to the 100th Grey Cup.

District championship games scheduled

The PIAA football playoffs continue this weekend with two District 6 championship contests and a District 5 title game.

n In District 6-AA, sixth-seeded Forest Hills (9-3) will play top-seeded Richland

(12-0) at 7 p.m. on Friday at Mansion Park. The winner will advance to face the winner of the 10-AA championship game between Hickory (10-1) and Wilmington (9-2).

n In District 6-A, sixth-seeded Bishop McCort (9-3) will face top-seeded Bellwood-Antis (11-1) at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Mansion Park. The winner will advance to face the winner of the 3-A championship game between Delone Catholic (8-3) and Steelton-Highspire (8-3).

n In District 5-A, fourth-seeded North Star (10-2) will face second-seeded Berlin-Brothersvalley (10-1) at 7 p.m. on Friday at Somerset High School. The winner will advance to face the winner of the District 7 (WPIAL) championship game between three-time defending state champion Clairton (12-0) and Sto-Rox (11-1). Clairton has won 59 consecutive games, tying a state record.

n District 5-AA champion Chestnut Ridge (6-5) will face District 9 champion Karns City (9-3) at 7 p.m. on Friday at Clarion University. The winner will advance to face the winner of the District 7 (WPIAL) championship game between Washington (12-0) and Aliquippa (12-0).
