Can you believe it? Autumn’s colorful October is born tomorrow.
Exciting things are happening here at The Tribune-Democrat during October. All month long we are celebrating and drawing attention to “National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.”
This will be the fifth year beating the drum of breast cancer awareness.
Our goal every year is very simple: Convince one more woman to get a mammogram.
Today, I urge you to make that your goal as well this month. Please talk to your loved ones and encourage them to get mammograms – screening is fast, easy and the right thing to do.
We are fortunate to have top-notch hospitals, doctors and research facilities right here in our backyard and region.
I am pleased to report that local leaders of our health-care facilities tell me this month-long awareness campaign is making a difference.
The experts confirm that early detection could lead to early cures. Especially when coupled with new, enhanced technology and expanded research, local health professionals and organizations are giving patients the care and support they need to fight against breast cancer and building promise for a better future.
The statistics are indeed alarming. It is estimated more than 200,000 new cases of breast cancer occur annually among women in the United States.
Surprisingly, more than 1,000 men also will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
More than 40,000 breast cancer deaths are expected in our nation this year, more than 1,900 of them in Pennsylvania.
Our hope is that our readers will be proactive and that the information we will be providing throughout the month will persuade those at risk to PLEASE get screened.
This educational campaign could not be possible without the generous support of our corporate neighbors.
I personally met with the heads of these organizations and many shared their own personal connection with this deadly disease. They understand the importance of spreading the word and did not hesitate to participate this year.

We hope you and your loved ones will set aside a small amount of time it takes to get a mammogram.
It very well be could be the best investment of time you will ever make, because early detection means everything when dealing with this deadly disease.
