  A monstrous tornado at least a half-mile wide roared through the Oklahoma City suburbs Monday, flattening entire neighborhoods and destroying an elementary school with a direct blow as children and teachers huddled against winds up to 200 mph. At least 51 people were killed, and officials said the death toll was expected to rise.

Somerset succumbs in straight sets

SHANKSVILLE — It was a long drive drive to Shanksville-Stonycreek High School from Meadville on Tuesday night.

For the Bulldogs volleyball squad, it was well worth the journey to their PIAA Class AA first-round contest. Meadville defeated District 5 champion Somerset in straight sets 25-21, 25-19, 25-15.

“We left at 2 p.m. and drove down here, stopping to get something to eat,” said Meadville coach Tammy Webber, whose team will play District 7 champion Mars, a 3-1 winner over Indiana, on Saturday at a site and time to be determined. “We are on a mission and this is part of that mission. We have four seniors that are seasoned. They’ve been to states and this is where they want to be again.”

The Golden Eagles (18-4) led in the early part of the first game, but after ties at 5 and 7, the Bulldogs took the lead, with seven kills from Leah Jones and three by Monica Jackson.

Somerset again led early in the second game, but after a tie at 3, Meadville again took over and rolled to the victory.

The pattern remained the same in the third, with the Golden Eagles leading early. After a tie at 10, the Bulldogs never trailed again.

“We never could get ahead,” Somerset coach Alix Rose said. “In three games, we were ahead only a few times. Maybe I’m superstitious, but when you can’t get ahead, it’s never a good outcome.

“We weren’t communicating with one another. We got down early on and I think we lost our confidence and we couldn’t get that back. We started making mistakes that we haven’t all season like letting the ball drop between two hitters and not going after the ball.”

Rose said her team had a lot of information on Meadville and spent all day Monday practicing.

“We had a game plan and we just couldn’t execute it tonight,” the Somerset coach said. “I told the girls in the locker room that all of them had to show up to play and that didn’t happen tonight. All of our hitters were in the negative but one and when you get to the state playoffs you can’t be making those mistakes that you don’t normally do. It’s a little disappointing. I asked them win or lose to give me everything they had out on the court and unfortunately they didn’t do that tonight.”

Janna Coyle had 12 digs and Maddy Ream had 13 assists for Somerset. Mackenzie McKee had eight kills while Sarah Mitchell and Julie Barron combined for six blocks for the Golden Eagles.

“We had a great run this year,” Rose said. “We just didn’t show up to play tonight.”

• Somerset worried about turnovers in semifinal game

  Somerset spent the week preparing for its first foray into the postseason in six years.
  The Golden Eagles (5-5) fell 21-7 to Hollidaysburg in that District 6 Class AAA first-round game in 2007.
  Somerset will hope for a different outcome this time as it moves into PIAA subregional action on Friday night. The squad finished as the third seed in the District 5-6-8-9 Class AAA region and will play second-seeded University Prep at 7 p.m. at Cupples Stadium in Pittsburgh in semifinal action.

  Play like there is tomorrow. Penn Cambria has had that mindset the last two weeks as they needed to win their last two games just to make it into the playoffs.

• Bedford boys defeat Somerset

  Bedford’s Blake Baer scored with 8:41 remaining to give the Bisons a 2-1 win Thursday night against Somerset in the District 5 Class AA boys soccer championship.
  It was the third straight district title for Bedford, which will take on District 9 champ Bradford 7 p.m. Saturday in a PIAA sub-regional at Northern Bedford.

  Somerset had its chances. But at the end of the day, the only thing that counts is now many goals go into the net.
  The Golden Eagles outplayed and outshot Juniata everywhere but on the scoreboard.

• Somerset claims District 5-AA volleyball crown

  It took a little under an hour for Somerset to defeat Bedford for the District 5 Class AA volleyball crown Thursday at Somerset High School.
  The Golden Eagles, who will play the District 9 runner-up, either Bradford or Punxsutawney, at 1 p.m.  Saturday in a PIAA Sub-Regional at Elk County Catholic in St. Marys, downed the Bisons 25-14, 25-9, 25-19.

• Somerset makes history against McCort

  While history was being celebrated down the road in Johnstown, history was being made on Friday night in Somerset.
  For the first time in 23 meetings, Somerset defeated Bishop McCort in football, as the Golden Eagles stunned the Crimson Crushers, 19-13.

  A few more signs saying “You’ve entered Golden Eagles Territory” align the streets of Somerset these days. There are a couple more people wearing Somerset football T-shirts at the grocery store.
  Funny what a couple of decisive victories can do for a program and a community seeking to move past a couple decades of mostly losing seasons.

• Somerset continues strong start against Bishop Carroll

  For the first time since 2004, Somerset is 2-0.
  The Golden Eagles’ strong start to the season continued with a dominating 28-14 win over the Bishop Carroll Huskies. The game was played in front of a large crowd.
