JOHNSTOWN —
The London Olympics are set to get under way at the end of July.
Among the hundreds of United States track and field athletes who are hoping to qualify this week at the U.S. Olympic trials in Eugene, Ore., is Westmont Hilltop and Penn State standout Karlee McQuillen.
McQuillen, who throws the javelin, has a qualifying throw of 55.71 meters for this week.
The Nittany Lion thrower captured the Big Ten javelin title at Penn State during her senior season last year and was a two-time state champion while at Westmont.
McQuillen has had her sights set on the 2012 Olympics in London. “2012 is a humongous year, and I’m going to have to progress to get to that level,” she said in an earlier interview with The Tribune-Democrat.
McQuillen will have her work cut out for her.
Rachel Yurkovich (61.06 meters) and Kara Patterson (60.36 meters) are currently the two top javeliners in the United States.

Locke grinds through as Pirates blank Astros

Locke allowed three hits over seven innings, Pedro Alvarez homered and the Pittsburgh Pirates won for the eighth time in 10 games, 1-0 over the Houston.
