Local Basketball Briefs 1-6-2011

JOHNSTOWN — Basketball

High School Boys

Windber 53 Conemaugh Valley 50

WINDBER –  Frank Meyers had 15 points, and Joe Pipon had 10 rebounds, and Brett Lucas added eight boards as Windber beat visiting Conemaugh Valley in the WestPAC.

The 2-5 Ramblers benefited from five 3-point field goals and a total of 18 points scored by players coming off the bench.

Dalton Uncapher had a game-high 20 points, including 10 free throws made, and Hunter Furman netted 13 for the 4-2 Blue Jays. Brandon Kendera scored 10 points.

Conemaugh Twp 61 Portage 46

DAVIDSVILLE - Host Conemaugh Township tore out to a 37-22 halftime advantage on its way to a victory over Portage on Wednesday.

Grant Speigle fueled the Indians with 20 points, including four 3-pointers while Dillon Boyer supplied 19 points.

Sean Cronauer led all scorers with 23 points for the Mustangs, who also got 15 points from Jake Bryja.

Cambria Heights 61 Penn Cambria 47

PATTON - Brad Caldwell led all scorers with 19 points as Cambria Heights topped visiting Penn Cambria in a Laurel Highlands Section 1 contest.

Bryce Brawley and Isaac Vescovi each chipped in with

14 points for the Highlanders.

A.J. Leahey paced the Panthers with 13 points and Kevin Quinn had 12.

Central Cambria 69 Bishop Guilfoyle 39

EBENSBURG – Central Cambria’s Zack Vigneault had 32 points, four assists and five rebounds as the Red Devils defeated visiting Bishop Guilfoyle in the LHAC. Vigneault made four of the Devils’ six

3-point field goals.

Brian Logue had 14 points for Bishop Guilfoyle.

 Bishop Carroll 58, Forest Hills 54

SIDMAN – Dylan Link and Mark Maruca each scored

16 points, and Nick Lassak had 11 as Bishop Carroll edged host Forest Hills.

Luke Gallaher had a game-high 25 points for the Rangers. Tanner Thomas added

13 points.

Johnstown 75 Westmont 50

Four Johnstown players scored in double figures as the Trojans defeated visiting Westmont.

Isaiah Haselrig and Phillip Madison led with 19 and

18 points, respectively. Quentin Brandon added 14 and Dwight Andrews had 12.

Joe Glennon led Westmont with 16 points.

Teammate Zach Drennen added a dozen.

North Star 76, Blacklick Valley 41

BOSWELL - North Star shot 45 percent while limiting Blacklick Valley to 26 percent shooting in a WestPAC North game.

Jacob Fleegle and Tony Strasiser each scored 18 points and Beau Soberdash added 17 for the Cougars (5-2).

Dalton Cesarz topped the Vikings with 16 points while John Sheesley supplied 12.

Bishop McCort 49 Richland 45

Bishop McCort used a 16-9 fourth-quarter scoring advantage in a comeback victory at Richland.

Mason del Rosario had

14 points, and Nemo Trexler had 13 for the Crushers. Alex Ritenour had 16 points and Dereck Malzi had 14 for the Rams.

Shade 45, Berlin 40

CAIRNBROOK – Kenny Gibbons scored 20 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to help Shade win. Nick Kephart had 10 rebounds for the Panthers.

Dakota Glessner had

19 points and Alex Will had

16 rebounds for Berlin.

Somerset 95

Bedford 59

SOMERSET – Somerset made 13 3-point field goals, including 10 of 14 in the opening half, in a one-sided win over visiting Bedford.

Brent Barron had 18 points, Ed Buck had 16 and Jake Close added 13 for Somerset.

Bedford’s Marcus Shippey had 17 points and Ryan Salt had 13.

Northern Cambria 60 Marion Center 55

MARION CENTER – Adam Polites had 15 points, six assists and seven rebounds as Northern Cambria edged host Marion Center in the Heritage Conference.

Jeff Hogan had 11 points, and Nick Lee netted 10 for the Colts.

Marion Center’s Alex Woodrow had 17 points, Nick Lamantia had 12, and  Jake Eisenhart had 11.

High School Girls

Somerset 47

Bedford 33

BEDFORD - Bits Barron scored 16 points and Emily Satkovich added 14 as Somerset picked up a road win.

Summer Hartung topped the Bisons with 12 points.

Richland 45

Bishop McCort 33

Katie Gehlmann had

18 points, seven assists and five steals as Richland defeated host Bishop McCort.

Sarah Pfeil had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Rams.

Cambria Heights 48 Penn Cambria 45

CRESSON - Serafina Bills scored 11 points and Danielle Bodek added 10 as Cambria Heights edged host Penn Cambria.

Brianna Mulhearn topped the Panthers with 12 points while Brianna Kearney and Megan Wheeler added

10 points apiece.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.

    Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record.

    Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
    Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever.
