Four named to all-state team

JOHNSTOWN — Bishop Carroll’s run to the state semifinal helped garner some individual honors.

Huskies’ running back Ryan Woo and linebacker Josh Chumrik were named to the Pennsylvania Sports Writers Class A All-State team released on Tuesday while teammate Taylor Makin was a second-team linebacker.

Greater Johnstown’s Calvin Anderson was named to the Class AAA team. The Class AA and AAAA teams are scheduled to be released today.

Woo, a 6-foot, 160-pound senior who missed most of his junior year to a leg injury, ran for 2,107 yards and 19 touchdowns to lead Bishop Carroll’s option attack.

Bishop Carroll coach Craig Sponsky said Woo is “a tremendous athlete who had a breakthrough year for us. He rebounded from an injury his junior year to really catapult us offensively. He helped us have a very successful offense and put us in position to win football games.”

The Huskies did that, going 11-3 and capturing the District 6 Class A championship. They advanced to the PIAA semifinals before falling to Riverside.

They almost certainly wouldn’t have gotten there without the strong defensive play of outside linebacker/defensive end Chumrik and inside backer Makin.

Chumrik finished with

21 sacks.

“He’s almost the complete package,” Sponsky said. “He’s fast, strong and has great size.

“At times, he was a dominating force off the edge. At times, he took offenses out of what they wanted to do and limited offenses, at times, to running between the tackles. He really put pressure on opposing quarterbacks.”

When the opposition did try to go inside, they played into Bishop Carroll’s hands – and often ran into Makin’s arms.

“Between Chumrik and (defensive end David) Kephart, both guys forced people inside and Taylor really did a nice job of being a run stopper this year.”

Sponsky said that while it was nice to have three players recognized, it wasn’t what motivated the Huskies.

“No. 1, they’d all tell you they’d trade individual awards for team success,” he said. “It takes a special type of athlete to put the team before individual accomplishment. When they buy into the program, it results in team success and they get honored individually.”

Anderson helped Greater Johnstown find success as well. The Trojans went 10-2 and won the District 6 Class AAA championship before falling to Clearfield in the state playoffs.

Anderson intercepted an amazing

11 passes - almost one per game – and forced a fumble.

He was remarkably consistent, intercepting at least one pass in seven different games. He had three against Bedford and two apiece against Cambria Heights and Westmont Hilltop.

A 6-foot-1, 165-pound senior who also played wide receiver, Anderson caught

20 passes for 331 yards and five touchdowns.

Greater Johnstown coach Tony Penna Jr. could not be reached for comment on Tuesday night.

  • james throws Pirates pick up fourth straight victory

There were times earlier in his career when James McDonald would run into trouble and innings would slow to a crawl. Even worse, runners would disappear, and not in a good way.
Too much thinking. Not enough attacking.

What do you think of the Johnstown Tomahawks name for the city's North American Hockey League team?

I like it
I don’t like it
It’s OK since the Jets and Chiefs were not available
I don’t care, hockey in Johnstown does not matter to me.
