Tour de Toona set to return
ALTOONA – Professional cycling will return to the Laurel Highlands this summer.
Bob Leverknight, media director for the International Tour de Toona, said Tuesday that the region will host a seven-day women’s professional race from Aug 23-29. After two decades of racing, the event took last year off due to economic issues.
“We’re looking forward to being back and part of the community,” Leverknight said. “The decision was made about two days ago by the race director that we’re going.”
The first event will be a time trial on Aug. 23 in Altoona. The second day of racing will begin in Vintondale and end in Cairnbook.
Cyclists will begin in Somerset County on Aug. 24 somewhere near Laurel Hill State Park, although Leverknight said the exact starting point has not been determined. That stage will have a mountaintop finish at Blue Knob Ski Resort.
Blair County will host the final four days of racing.
Men’s pro and amateur classes will join in on the action from
Aug. 27-29.
Leverknight said organizers will be seeking volunteers over the next few months. More information can be found at www.tourdetoona.com.
