Scoring all it needed in the second quarter, St. Francis turned to its defense throughout the second half Saturday to preserve a 10-3 victory over Robert Morris at DeGol Field.
The Red Flash (3-3) built the 10-3 lead on Anthony Abeid’s 50-yard touchdown reception from John Kelly with 12:06 left in the second.
Following a 44-yard field goal by the Colonials’ Greg Langer with 34 seconds left in the half, St. Francis answered as time expired with a 33-yard field goal by Josh Thiel.
Ter’Shaudney Phillips intercepted a Jeff Sinclair pass in the second quarter to produce St. Francis’ lone turnover. Robert Smith led the way for Red Flash tacklers with 10. Smith also recorded 1.5 sacks with Kaena Moose tallying a half-sack.
Offensively, Keion Wade handled the brunt of St. Francis’ rushing offense, carrying the ball 21 times for 96 yards. Kelly, who passed for 190 yards, also rushed for 55 yards. Kelly moved into second place on the school’s all-time completions list needing just one heading into the game.
Abeid led the hosts in receiving yardage, catching three passes for 116 yards.
The Colonials’ Evan Taylor picked up 139 yards on 25 rushes.
Sinclair completed just 10 of 28 passes for 113 yards.
St. Francis picked up its third win in 19 tries against Robert Morris while avenging a 45-14 thrashing last season. The Red Flash travel to Albany next week before returning home to face Wagner on Oct. 20.
