Scholastic basketball in brief — Dec. 16

High School Boys

Berlin 51 Meyersdale 42

BERLIN – Alex Will had

14 points to lead four players in double digits for Berlin. Ryan Lynch had 12 points while P.J. Watkins and Dakota Glessner had 10 each.

Chuck Donaldson and Matt Moser topped Meyersdale with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Conemaugh Twp. 65 Blacklick Valley 49

NANTY GLO – Grant Speigle had 21 points and Dillon Boyer added 11 as the Indians topped host Blacklick Valley.

Hayden Stumpo scored

11 points for Conemaugh Township.

Dalton Cesarz led the Vikings with 20 points.

Conemaugh Valley 79 Ferndale 37

Dalton Uncapher led four Blue Jays in double figures with 24 points to lead Conemaugh Valley.

Brandon Kendera added

18 points, while Hunter Furman and Ryan Graham finished with 14 and 11, respectively. Dave Horvath had nine points and five assists for Ferndale.

Johnstown 65 Bishop Guilfoyle 52

Host Johnstown built its lead with a 36-25 edge in the middle quarters en route to a season-opening triumph over the Marauders. Phillip Madison’s 15 points led the Trojans, who also received 12 points from Alquan Williams and 10 points each from Mark Watson and Quintin Brandon.

Evan Creppage’s 15 points paced Bishop Guilfoyle.

North Star 77 Portage 45

BOSWELL – Jacob Fleegle scored a game-high 29 points to lead North Star.

Beau Soberdash (12) and Cory Boom (10) also scored in double figures for the Cougars.

Jake Bryja led Portage with 18 points, while Sean Cronauer added 15.

Northern Cambria 64 Purchase Line 48

NORTHERN CAMBRIA – Tony Rocco scored 14 points and Jeff Hogan added 10 to lead Northern Cambria past Purchase Line.

Cody Stolitza and Seth Goodlin had 11 points each to top the visitors, who got 10 points from Dylan Fetterman.

Shade 53

Shanksville 27

SHANKSVILLE – Kenny Gibbons and M.J. Knapp each had 18 points to power the Panthers past the host Vikings.

Shade outscored Shanksville 40-17 over the final three quarters.

Carter Slade led Shanksville with nine points.

Richland 59

Cambria Heights 31

Dereck Malzi had 25 points to lead Richland over visiting Cambria Heights.

Kyle Flick scored 12 for the Rams. Brad Caldwell had a dozen to lead the Highlanders.

Somerset 87

Central Cambria 75

SOMERSET – Somerset had five players in double figures, led by Brent Barron’s 18 points, in a win over Central Cambria.

Jake Close added 12 points for the Eagles, while Eddie Buck had 11 and Devin Pritts and Zach Helsley both had 10.

Buck also had 10 rebounds.

Central Cambria’s Zack Vigneault led all scorers with 30 points, while Blake Bussard and Zach Rodkey had 14 and 13, respectively.

Westmont 59 Windber 46

The host Hilltoppers saw three scorers reach double figures in a win over Windber that was originally scheduled for Monday. Zach Drennen led Westmont with 12 points while Joe Glennon and Mike Vliet each totaled 11 points.

The Ramblers’ Brett Lucas topped all scorers with 21 points.

Salisbury-Elk Lick 66 Rockwood 43

SALISBURY – Alex Beiler’s 29 points topped all scorers as the Elks dropped Rockwood in a WestPAC-South clash. Salisbury-Elk Lick’s Ryan Vogt had 15 points and 12 rebounds while teammate Geoff Garlitz added 10 points.

Ethan Keefer’s 12 points spurred Rockwood.

High School Girls

Bishop McCort 58 Bishop Carroll 47

EBENSBURG – Jillian Kegg’s 18 points led the way for the Crimson Crushers as they opened the LHAC with a road win.

Dani Link’s 13 points and 11 rebounds paced the Huskies, who received 11 points from Gabby Gueguen.

United 63

Saltsburg 57

SALTSBURG – The Lions’ Eden Bloom scored 20 points as her squad outscored the Trojans 26-13 from the free-throw line in a Heritage Conference victory. Kelsey Yaworski added 19 points and Wendi Walsh chipped in 15 for the guests.

Saltsburg’s Sarah Prenni had 19 points while Trisha Gabrielson tallied 14 and Becky Hill 10.

Williamsburg 60, Cambria Heights 49

WILLIAMSBURG – Williamsburg’s Angie Everhart led all scorers with 30 points.

Danielle Bodek, Katy Wendekier and Serafina Bills scored 11 points apiece for Cambria Heights.

    The AAABA League opens on Tuesday at Point Stadium with two new, but familiar managers, a new but familiar sponsor, an expanded interleague schedule and two new franchises committed to the 2013 season.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.

    Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record.

    Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
    Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever.
