Scholastic basketball in brief — Jan. 15

Basketball

High School Boys

Berlin 57, Blacklick Valley 50

NANTY GLO – Alex Will had 24 points, 16 rebounds and eight blocked shots, and Dakota Glessner had 16 as Berlin beat host Blacklick Valley.

Dalton Cesarz had 14 points and 12 rebounds for Blacklick.

Victor Manda had nine points and 10 assists for the Vikings.

Johnny Sheesley scored 13 points and Brandon Garver had 12.

Johnstown 80, Penn Cambria 52

Alkwan Williams scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Johnstown defeated visiting Penn Cambria.

Dwight Andrews had 16 points, 11 rebounds and six steals for the Trojans, who got 14 points and eight rebounds from Isaiah Haselrig. Phillip Madison added 11 points.

A.J. Leahey’s 15 points topped the Panthers, who got 12 points from Kevin Quinn.

Bishop Guilfoyle 59, Somerset 57

SOMERSET - Bishop Guilfoyle took an inbound pass the length of the court and sank a shot with a second to play to take the win.

Brian Logue led the Marauders with 14 points while Matt Weigand added 11 and Evan Creppage scored 10.

Eddie Buck’s 13 points fronted the hosts. Teammate Devin Pritts scored 11.

Westmont 55, Cambria Heights 41

Bryant Fisher’s 18 points paced the Hilltoppers as they earned a home win. Zach Drennen tallied 10 points for Westmont, which pulled away in the middle quarters with a 33-19 edge on the scoreboard.

Brad Caldwell had 16 points and fellow Highlander Isaac Vescovi scored 12.

Cambria County 88, Blair County 45

MUNDYS CORNER – Dom Williams netted 25 points and Tyler Berkebile had 19 as Cambria County Christian defeated visiting Blair County Christian.

Cambria County Christian is unbeaten in nine games, while Blair County is 4-1. Ty Maykovich had 15 points and Josiah Perry had 14 for the Panthers. Zach Nixon had a game-best 25 points for Blair County.

North Star 78, Ferndale 39

Jacob Fleegle had 20 points and eight assists as North Star beat host Ferndale. Beau Soberdash had 12 points.

Nate Davidson had 20 points for Ferndale, and Chad Eisenhuth had 12. Dave Horvath had 10 rebounds for the Jackets.

Shade 62, Salisbury-Elk Lick 49

SALISBURY – M.J. Knapp had 21 points and Kenny Gibbons added 15 as Shade took home a victory.

Ryan Vogt’s 22 points led the Elks while teammate Alex Beiler poured in 12 points.  

High School Girls

Cambria County 33, Blair County 17

MUNDYS CORNER – Alexis Wolfe (16 points) and Natalie Sokira (15) combined to score all but two of the Panthers’ points as they disposed of the Bobcats. Sokira also registered eight blocks while Wolfe had seven steals.

Richland 57, Bishop Carroll 49

EBENSBURG – Sarah Pfeil had 18 points and 12 rebounds as Richland beat host Bishop Carroll. Katie Gehlmann had nine assists, five rebounds and seven points for the Rams.

Bishop Carroll’s Becky Hogue had 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Westmont Hilltop 70, Cambria Heights 24

PATTON – Westmont Hilltop limited Cambria Heights to five second-half points in a one-sided road victory.

Hilltop’s Alyssa Yewcic had a game-high 22 points, seven rebounds and three assists. The Hilltoppers pulled away with a 28-9 second-quarter advantage.

Central Cambria 68, Conemaugh Twp. 55

DAVIDSVILLE – Emily Wright’s 24 points paced the Red Devils as they captured a non-conference win over the Indians in a game that saw the teams combine to attempt 57 free throws. Bri Wasser scored 12 for Central Cambria while Taylor Swatsworth and Breanne James each scored 11.

Katie Reckner scored 21 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to lead Conemaugh Township. Lindy Baer scored 13 points while Megan Boyer pitched in 10.

Conemaugh Valley 57, Portage 42

Host Conemaugh Valley closed out Portage with an 18-1 run that lasted the entire fourth quarter to grab a WestPAC win.

Jamie Cekada’s 17 points and seven rebounds led the way for the Blue Jays. Jen Percinsky’s 12 points added to the home cause.

Emily Chobany led the Mustangs with 15 points and a dozen steals while Olivia McCabe had 11 points,

11 rebounds and eight blocked shots.

North Star 58, Ferndale 34

The visiting Cougars got 12 points from Taby Smith and 10 from Bradie Rhoades in a WestPAC win over Ferndale.

The Yellow Jackets, who only played with seven players, were led by Gabby Kull’s 15 points.

Forest Hills 69, Bishop McCort 39

SIDMAN –Becky Bard had 24 points and seven steals as Forest Hills beat visiting Bishop McCort. Amy Wiesheier had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Casey Gallaher had

15 points and five steals for the Rangers.

Jillian Kegg had 18 points, including 10 free throws, for McCort.

Greensburg CC 72, Ligonier Valley 62

GREENSBURG – The Centurions hit 14 3-pointers and closed out the game with a 16-7 run in a non-conference win.

Tess Zufall had 23 points to lead the victors.

Karly Mellinger added 20 points while Emily Kelly pitched in 12 points.

Maddy Grimm’s career-high 28 points led the Rams. Callen Knupp scored 12 in the loss.

Shade 54, Salisbury-Elk Lick 47

SALISBURY – A 14-5 second-quarter push gave the Panthers the cushion they needed to grab a WestPAC win. Becca Muha’s 20 points and

15 rebounds boosted Shade, which received 11 points from Aubrey Polochak and 10 points from Chelsey Pongrac.

The Elks’ Alayna Harshberger had 21 points and 11 steals while teammate Emily Beitzel scored a dozen points.

Windber 60, Blacklick Valley 38

WINDBER – The Ramblers used 15 points from Cheyenne Feathers and another 11 points from Rachel Lovely en route to a victory over the Vikings.

Blacklick Valley, which had no scorer top eight points, was outscored 37-11 in the second and third quarters.

    There were times earlier in his career when James McDonald would run into trouble and innings would slow to a crawl. Even worse, runners would disappear, and not in a good way.
    Too much thinking. Not enough attacking.

    The AAABA League opens on Tuesday at Point Stadium with two new, but familiar managers, a new but familiar sponsor, an expanded interleague schedule and two new franchises committed to the 2013 season.
    A lot of activity took place during the offseason, including the AAABA national committee’s vote to expand the age limit to 21 years old beginning in 2013.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.

    Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record.

    Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
    Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever.
