Local Basketball Briefs 1-25-2011

JOHNSTOWN — High School Boys

Johnstown 70, Bishop McCort 52


Four Johnstown players, led by Alkwan Williams’ 18 points, scored in double figures as the host Trojans defeated city rival Bishop McCort on Monday night to remain unbeaten in Section 2 of the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference.

Williams added 15 rebounds for Johnstown (11-1 overall, 8-1 LHAC, 6-0 Section 2), which also got 15 points and 12 rebounds from Isaiah Haselrig along with 14 points each from Dwight Andrews and Quentin Brandon.

The Crimson Crushers got a team-high 17 points from Patrick O’Reilly and Nemo Trexler had 10.

Forest Hills 65, Central Cambria 55

SIDMAN – Luke Gallaher scored 24 points and Tanner Thomas added 22 as host Forest Hills stopped Central Cambria.

Zack Vigneault had a game-high 26 points for the Red Devils while Zak Ambrisco added a dozen.

Windber 63, Blacklick Valley 54

WINDBER – Jarid Cover scored a game-high 20 points as host Windber downed Blacklick Valley.

The Ramblers also got 13 points from Brett Lucas and eight rebounds from Joe Pipon.

The Vikings got 16 points from Dalton Cesarz and 15 from Brandon Garver.

North Star 52, Berlin 44

BOSWELL – Jacob Fleegle scored 27 points to lead host North Star past Berlin.

Wade Walker added 11 points for the Cougars (10-2), who got strong defensive efforts from Tony Strasiser, Beau Soberdash, Cory Bloom and Hayden Rigo.

Alex Will scored 16 points for the Mountaineers (8-4) while Ryan Lynch added 11.

Northern Cambria 53, Portage 42

NORTHERN CAMBRIA – Andy Hancharik scored 13 points and Tony Rocco added 11 as Northern Cambria beat visiting Portage in a nonconference game.

Sean Cronauer’s game-high 17 points wasn’t enough for the Mustangs, who also got 13 points from Jake Bryja.

Northern Garrett 71, Salisbury-Elk Lick 46

ACCIDENT, Md. – Matt Gibson scored 19 points, Steven Holtschneider had 14 and Cody Humberson added 12 to lead Northern Garrett to a victory over visiting Salisbury-Elk Lick.

Ryan Vogt topped the Elks with 18 points while Brandon Miller supplied 16. Geoff Garlitz pulled down 10 rebounds and Alex Beiler chipped in six assists for the visitors.

Penn Cambria 44, Bishop Carroll 28

EBENSBURG – A.J. Leahey scored 16 points to help lead Penn Cambria to a road win over Bishop Carroll.

The Huskies got 12 points from Nick Lassak.

Conemaugh Valley 58, Ferndale 15

Conemaugh Valley got 14 points and 16 rebounds from Dalton Uncapher in a big win over visiting Ferndale.

Hunter Furman added 13 points while Jake Roberts provided 12 points and nine boards for the Blue Jays.

Dave Horvath had seven points to lead the Yellow Jackets.

High School Girls

Cambria County Christian 43, Seeds of Faith 24


MUNDYS CORNER – Natalie Sokira scored a game-high 26 points to lead host Cambria County Christian to a win over Seeds of Faith Christian Academy.

Alexis Logan scored 14 points for the visitors.

Clearfield 58, Northern Cambria 51

CLEARFIELD – Dakota Farnery scored 17 points and Breanna Peters added 15 as Clearfield held off visiting Northern Cambria.

The Colts were led by 14 points from Kelley Sedlock and 13 points each from Emily Stiles and Ashley Delfonso.

Conemaugh Township 57, Blacklick Valley 37

DAVIDSVILLE – Conemaugh Township held visiting Blacklick Valley to 10 first-half points in a WestPAC victory.

Lyndy Baer’s 16 points paced the Indians (6-6) while Kelsie Smith had 15. Katie Reckner pulled down 14 rebounds while Megan Boyer had five steals.

Jami Kish led the Vikings (8-5) with 10 points. Danielle Lesso grabbed eight steals.

Conemaugh Valley 52, Ferndale 21

Jen Percinsky scored 10 points, Jamie Cekada had six steals and six assists, and Courtney McCallay grabbed six rebounds as Conemaugh Valley belted visiting Ferndale.

Ashlee Grow led the winless Yellow Jackets with 12 points and added 12 rebounds.

Portage 57, North Star 50

PORTAGE – Kelsie Spaid and Emily Chobany each scored 16 points as Portage held off visiting North Star.

Spaid added 10 rebounds while Chobany grabbed six steals and dished out five assists for the Mustangs, who also got 12 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots from Olivia McCabe.

Tabatha Smith topped the Cougars with 10 points.

Shade 62, Shanksville 50

CAIRNBROOK – Chelsey Pongrac scored a game-high 27 points and added seven steals as host Shade defeated rival Shanksville-Stonycreek.

Becca Muha added 11 points, 11 boards and five blocks while Ashley Manges provided 11 points and dished out eight assists for the Panthers.

Kelsey Shultz scored 14 points to top the Vikings, who also got 11 points each from Lauren Brewer and Kayla Stockenus.

Penn Cambria 66, Johnstown Christian 13

CRESSON – Brianna Kearney led all scorers with 17 points as Penn Cambria routed visiting Johnstown Christian.

Tori Shingler added 12 points for the Panthers, who also got 11 points from Mia Pyo.

Bishop Guilfoyle 69, Johnstown 28

ALTOONA – Halee Adams scored 28 points to lead Bishop Guilfoyle to a big victory over visiting Johnstown.

Tynesha Smith led the Trojans with 14 points.

    There were times earlier in his career when James McDonald would run into trouble and innings would slow to a crawl. Even worse, runners would disappear, and not in a good way.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.

    Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record.

    Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
    Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever.
