High School Basketball Briefs 2-17-2011

High School Boys

Forest Hills 65, Penn Cambria 44


CRESSON – Tanner Thomas scored his 1,000th career point as Forest Hills beat host Penn Cambria on Wednesday.

Thomas, a 6-foot-4 senior  who only has two 3-pointers in his career, made the second of two free throws with less than 21/2 minutes remaining for the milestone and finished with 19 points.

Luke Gallaher added

16 points for the Rangers in their final regular-season game.

Conemaugh Township 57, Windber 38

DAVIDSVILLE - Dillon Boyer scored a game-high

20 points and had seven steals as host Conemaugh Township defeated Windber.

Grant Speigle added

15 points and seven rebounds for the Indians, who also got seven boards from Dan Zambanini.

Joe Pipon topped the Ramblers with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Portage 47, Ferndale 33

Jake Bryja led all scorers with 24 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, and Sean Cronauer added 17 points, as Portage earned a road win at Ferndale.

Chad Eisenhuth had 10 points to top the Yellow Jackets, who also got 13 rebounds from Dave Horvath.

Johnstown 60, Northern Cambria 52

Johnstown had four players score in double figures, led by Alkwan Williams and Dwight Andrews with 15 points each, as the Trojans defeated visiting Northern Cambria in a non-conference encounter.

Quentin Brandon added 13 points and Isaiah Haselrig had 11 for the hosts.

Northern Cambria, which hit 12 3-pointers, got 17 points from Andy Hancharik, including five 3-pointers; 14 from Adam Polites; and 12 from Tony Rocco.

Richland 51, Bishop Carroll 36

Dereck Malzi scored 21 points and Alex Ritenour added 16 as Richland defeated visiting Bishop Carroll.

Richland’s team defense limited Carroll to 10 first-half points as the Rams led 27-10 at intermission.

Shanksville 59, Salisbury-Elk Lick 52

SALISBURY – Carter Slade led the way with 19 points as Shanksville-Stonycreek picked up a road win.

Mike Bittner added 11 points for the Vikings.

Ryan Vogt scored 19 points to top the Elks, who also got 17 points from Alex Beiler, 10 points from Brandon Miller and 11 rebounds from Geoff Garlitz.

Shade 75, Rockwood 40

CAIRNBROOK – Ryan Fyock led a quartet of double-digit scorers with 21 points as host Shade ended the regular season with a win.

Brett Hart supplied 12 points and M.J. Knapp and Kenny Gibbons added 10 apiece for Shade, which also got six assists from Gibbons, five from Hart, four steals from Fyock and 10 rebounds from Knapp.

Ethan Keefer topped the Rockets with 16 points.

Belleville Mennonite 57, Cambria C.C. 44

BELLEVILLE – Micah Peachey scored 19 points while Nate Metzler and Sam Morgan each had 13 as Belleville Mennonite defeated Cambria County Christian on Tuesday.

Dom Williams topped the Panthers with 17 points while Josiah Perry added 10.

High School Girls

Forest Hills 68, Central Cambria 35


EBENSBURG – Becky Bard and Megan Gould each scored 16 points to help lead Forest Hills to a road win.

Jess DiFlauro added 10 points for the Rangers while Taylor Swatsworth topped the Red Devils with 14.

Ligonier Valley 51, Saltsburg 22

LIGONIER – Chelsea Hropovich and Maddy Grimm each had double-doubles to lead Ligonier Valley.

Hropovich had 12 points and 10 rebounds while Grimm had 11 rebounds and 10 points.

Kyra Ludwig scored 11 points for the Rams.

    There were times earlier in his career when James McDonald would run into trouble and innings would slow to a crawl. Even worse, runners would disappear, and not in a good way.
    Too much thinking. Not enough attacking.

    A lot of activity took place during the offseason, including the AAABA national committee’s vote to expand the age limit to 21 years old beginning in 2013.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.

    Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record.

    Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
    Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever.
