JOHNSTOWN —
Johnstown’s two representatives in the 66th annual AAABA Tournament along with the other 14 teams in the field learned who their opening-round opponents would be on Sunday night at the players pairings banquet held at Cambria County War Memorial Arena.
Delweld will take on Cleveland in the official opener at Point Stadium at 7:30 tonight while Martella’s Pharmacy plays New Brunswick, N.J., last year’s runner-up, at the Point at 1 p.m.
Martella’s is playing from the upper bracket and Delweld is in the lower bracket.
“We’ve never been one to worry about who’s in the other dugout,” Delweld manager Chris DelSignore said. “We just want to try to take care of our own business. We’re going to take the same approach that we have over the last four tournaments that we’ve been in, and that’s just to go out and play fundamental baseball.
“I don’t know anything about them (Cleveland) as of yet, and I’m sure they don’t know much about us either. We’ll probably go into this game on equal footing, so I’m sure I’ll get some calls about some things to expect, but what it comes down to is baseball and whether you can execute or not.”
Cleveland manager Bill Kirchner says his team is excited to draw the official opener against Delweld.
“The kids were pulling for it,” Kirchner said. “They really wanted the experience. When we drew No. 8 and were sitting here waiting and hoping to play Johnstown, the kids were jumping out of their skin.
“It will be a challenge. Hopefully my guys will respond to that type of crowd. I probably have a few of them that have played in state tournaments in high school that have seen that type of crowd. Hopefully we’ll have them ready for it. We have a mix of players who are high school and college.
“They have to be ready for one pitch, one play, one at-bat at a time, and that’s what I’ll get them focused on.”
DelSignore announced earlier that right-hander Carter Lehman will start for his team.
“We’re not going to deviate from what has been successful for us,” DelSignore said. “Carter Lehman has been a workhorse for us. He won nine ballgames for us this year.”
Right-hander Ron Stout will get the start for Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn Hurricanes.
“He was a pick-up from our league and probably the second-best in the league,” Kirchner said.
For Martella’s, New Brunswick is a better-known foe.
“We played them last year, and they beat us 12-9,” Martella’s manager Chris Pfeil said. “It was a little bit of a slugfest. Hopefully, we’re able to get out and control our offense a little bit. I know they’re good because they knocked Brooklyn out, beating them 2-0 in that regional. I can guarantee they have a good baseball team.
“When you really don’t know a whole lot about a team other than the guys that are returning from last year, we’re going to rely on our guys to play our game, try to stay composed and go out and put forth our best effort. If we don’t make errors and are able to get base hits when runners are in scoring position, we can hang with anybody.”
New Brunswick manager Glenn Fredricks also remembers his team’s last encounter with Martella’s.
“What I remember, we jumped out to a big lead and they narrowed the gap late,” Fredricks said. “They are a well-coached team and play good baseball, and we’re very aware of that.
“The bulk of our roster was due to come back, but we’ve been unfortunate with a couple of breaks. A couple guys got hurt in league play and a couple made other commitments for the summertime and couldn’t join us here. But the kids that did, put the time and effort in and are really happy. They see this as a great opportunity to make it out this far and play in this tournament once again.”
Right-hander Scott Dixon, the co-Vuckovich award winner along with Lehman, will get the start against the Greater Middlesex Matrix.
“It’s going to be a mental approach at the plate,” Pfeil said. “We’re going to get guys in scoring position and bring them in. When we’ve been successful, we’ve driven balls into the gaps.”
Rutgers-bound right-hander Andrew Sullivan will get the start for the Matrix.
“Hopefully, Sully gives us a chance to win and our offense comes to life,” Fredricks said.
“We’ve been struggling a little bit lately, but now’s the time to show up and hit the ball.”
In other action today, Buffalo will play Zanesville at 10 a.m. at Point Stadium and the other five games, which all start at noon, include: Altoona Regional champ Philadelphia taking on Altoona at Lilly; Toledo, Ohio, opposite defending champion New Orleans at Fichtner; traditional powerhouse Baltimore facing Maryland State at Roxbury; New York squaring off against Chicago Metro at St. Michael; and Livonia, Mich., playing Columbus, Ohio, at Portage.
