PITTSBURGH —
Pitt’s football season ended a week ago, but the honors and opportunities continue to roll in for Johnstown High graduate Antwuan Reed.
The Panthers’ All-Big East Second Team senior cornerback received invitations to participate in two college all-star games that are utilized by scouts to evaluate talent for the NFL Draft.
Reed said Friday night that he decided to play in the Players All-Star Classic at War Memorial Stadium/AT&T Field in Little Rock, Ark., on Feb. 4.
“It means a lot to have another chance to play another game,” said Reed, who noted that earlier in the week he received an invite to next month’s NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
“This all-star game is another chance to show what I’ve got,” Reed added. “You go out there and play, have fun and enjoy it.”
Reed started all 13 games this season, including the BBVA Compass Bowl setback to SMU in Birmingham, Ala. A two-year starter, he was a member of four Pitt bowl teams during his career.
This season he had 30 tackles and a team-best seven pass break-ups. He recovered three fumbles, returning one 20 yards against Syracuse for a late touchdown that sealed a Pitt win and made the Panthers bowl eligible. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Reed also recovered a blocked punt and returned it 10 yards for a score against Utah.
“It feels good to be selected for a game like this,” Reed said. “I just have to keep working hard and we’ll see what happens.”
Earlier on Friday, Pitt distributed a news release stating that Reed had been selected to participate in the Casino Del Sol College All Star game on Monday in Tucson, Ariz. But Reed said he opted to play in the first-year Players All-Star Classic.
“I got the invite and ended up going to that game (in Little Rock),” Reed said.
The game follows a North-South format. Kurt Schottenheimer, with 30 pro seasons and 22 years in the NFL, will lead the South. Martin Bayless, a 25-year pro with 14 years as a NFL player, will front the North.
The all-star games are projected to draw a significant number of NFL scouts regardless of the venue.
