BLAIRSVILLE —
The St. Francis women’s golf team continued its solid play this spring with a third-place finish in the Red Flash Spring Invitational.
So did Samantha Formeck.
Formeck, a Northern Cambria graduate, finished second in the 36-hole event hosted by St. Francis at Tom’s Run Golf Club (par 72, 5,817 yards) to help Youngstown State (325-316-625) take home the team title.
Robert Morris (333-326-659) finished in second while St. Francis shot 334-330-664 to finish third.
Individual medalist honors went to Youngstown’s Kathryn Rogner, who rebounded from an opening-round 79 with a closing 73 to edge teammate Formeck (77-77) by two shots.
St. Francis’ Ann Colligan was the high individual finisher for the Red Flash, as the freshman recorded rounds of 81-79-160 to finish third.
Red Flash freshman Samantha Smyers and senior Caryn Doege each shot 164 to finish as part of a four-person tie for sixth.
Other top finishers for St. Francis were junior Kaitlin Helsel, who finished 14th (84-88-172), while junior Skylar Hay and senior Laura Smith tied for 18th at 178.
After watching his squad finish fifth and third in consecutive events, St. Francis coach Chris Cascino feels his team is making good progress toward its Northeast Conference Championship, which is being played at LPGA International in Daytona, Fla. April 21-23.
“This is our third tournament of the season and it was our best showing and lowest team score so far,” Cascino said. “I am definitely seeing improvement throughout our squad, which is great. I think if we can keep moving forward that we are building towards a peak right at championship week.”
The Red Flash see action again this week, as Cascino’s squad travels to Ohio for the Falcon Invitational at Bowling Green on April 16-17.
