JOHNSTOWN —
Johnstown High trailed by 10 points 3 minutes into the second quarter while playing in front of a loud, packed gym at Bishop McCort on Saturday night.
The Trojans whittled the deficit to one point at halftime. Johnstown then used a dominant rebounding performance and a stellar showing on the free throw line during a fast-paced second half to edge the Crushers 76-68.
“I credit Bishop McCort for playing as hard as they did,” Trojans coach Neil Cobaugh said. “They came out with intensity and they used the big crowd to their advantage. We let that affect us a little bit. It took us a half to calm down. Once we did, we asserted our will a little bit.
“What a crowd. What a game.”
All five Johnstown (16-1 overall, 12-0 LHAC,
6-0 Section 2) starters scored in double digits. Alkwan Williams had a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
“We stayed together as a team and tried to compose ourselves so we could come back in the second half,” Williams said, referring to Johnstown’s overcoming a 31-21 deficit with 5:16 left in the first half.
Dwight Andrews was an inside-outside threat, scoring 18 points with three 3-pointers while also grabbing seven rebounds and blocking three shots. Isaiah Haselrig had 10 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks.
“Having Isaiah (Haselrig) and Alkwan (Williams) battle on the boards and having Dwight (Andrews) at 6-5, and our guards helping out rebounding is big,” Cobaugh said. “We talked at halftime and said how we’re going to win this game is by playing defense and controlling the boards.”
Johnstown’s Mark Watson scored 15 points, and Philip Madison had 10. The Trojans blocked seven shots and outrebounded McCort 37-24.
