Annual all-star volleyball match set

JOHNSTOWN — The region’s most talented volleyball seniors will compete in the 26th Annual Johnstown Area vs Somerset Area All-Star Volleyball Match at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Bishop McCort High School. The event is sponsored by the Greater Johnstown Volleyball Club.

The Johnstown-Area team, coached this year by Conemaugh Valley’s Brian Oberneder and Westmont Hilltop’s Denise Nairn includes Alex Lieb of Bishop Carroll Catholic, Leigh Burkhart of Bishop McCort, Jamie Cekada of Conemaugh Valley, Elizabeth Chobany of Ferndale, Brenna Wright of Forest Hills, Megan Gipe and Natalie Vranich of Richland, Maggie Slawson of United, Brianna Trentini and Rachel Roper of Westmont-Hilltop, Samantha Elkin of Central Cambria, and Maggie McClintock of Greater Johnstown.

The Somerset-Area squad will be coached by North Star’s Tony Crisafulli and Conemaugh Township’s Erin Siverd. The team includes Emily Philip and Kelsey Snyder of Berlin, Lyndy Baer and Kelsey Smith of Conemaugh Township, Abby Stahl of Meyersdale, Krista Valentine and Lauren Walker of North Star, Sam Emert of Rockwood, Brittany Kalanish of Shade, Kayla Stockenus of Shanksville-Stonycreek, Lackyn Jano of Somerset-Area, and Jenna Faith of Windber.

“The Greater Johnstown Volleyball Club is once again excited to offer the elite senior players in our area another chance to play a sport they have dedicated so much time to in one last game,” said Teri Cruse, one of the event’s organizers. “The best part is seeing them play with those that have always been their competition and hopefully some lifetime friendships will be begin to be formed.”

Cruse, along with her husband Denny, Don Civis, and a team of organizers have worked diligently with the volleyball club to provide volleyball opportunities year-round to the sport’s enthusiasts.

“It is a very enjoyable event for the players and spectators,” said Bishop Carroll volleyball coach Joe Skura, who assists in keeping stats for the game with his assistant coach, Lauren Oldham, and Teri Cruse. “Our region really has some impressive volleyball talent coming from high-quality programs that have competed at high levels this season. The night is always the best-of-the-best.”

Skura applauded the event’s organizers for their efforts on behalf of volleyball and spotlighting the talent. “These individuals go above and beyond to bring volleyball opportunities to our community,” he said. “This event is the only one available for the talent in the Johnstown and Somerset area, and it allows the young ladies to compete one last time and interact with the players they’ve competed with and against for a number of years.”

Conrad Sikirica is the announcer for the game while Denny Cruse and Tim Rough serve as the officials and Bo Cruse and Ed Shank are the line judges. John Durica is the scorekeeper. All proceeds from the event go to the Twelve Wishes of Christmas, sponsored by WKYE radio.
