JOHNSTOWN —
Westmont Hilltop’s Alyssa Yewcic views the fourth annual AmeriServ Senior Hoops Showcase as a reward for a season of hard work and dedication.
“It’s an honor and I’m pretty excited about it,” said Yewcic, who scored 1,180 career points and grabbed 683 rebounds over the past three seasons. “It will be challenging but fun. Playing against a lot of these players throughout the season, you have to be competitive. Now, playing with some of them on the same team, it’s going to be different.”
Yewcic will play on the South squad in the 3 p.m. opener of a doubleheader.
Like Yewcic, Northern Cambria’s Kelley Sedlock appreciates the opportunity to participate in the April 10 game at Pitt-Johnstown’s Sports Center.
“I’m really excited to play with people who love the game as much as I do,” said Sedlock, a 5-foot-5 guard on the North squad. “I’m really excited to play with a bunch of people who are experienced and good players. Playing at a high level with them will be a great experience for me. I’m going to be playing college ball next year at St. Vincent. This will be good for me.”
Shade’s Chelsey Pongrac and Meyersdale’s Katie Vena are 1,000-point scorers for the South, whose lineup also includes Salisbury-Elk Lick’s Lydia Hale-Cooper, Conemaugh Valley’s Nikki Ledwich, Windber’s Rachel Lovely and Courtney Petrunak, Johnstown’s Tynesha Smith, Chartice Wyatt and Amber Mangus, Somerset’s Emily Satkovich, and Conemaugh Township’s Stephanie Summits. Windber’s Rich Price will coach the South.
“This game is another stepping stone,” said Yewcic, who plans to attend UPJ and hopes to continue her basketball career. The 5-11 forward had 496 points as a senior and scored in double digits in 26 of Westmont’s 28 games.
The 21-7 Hilltoppers finished third in District 6-AA and won a state playoff game.
“I loved playing with the people I played with at Westmont,” Yewcic said. “This is an awesome way to end the season and my career.”
The North squad, coached by Cambria Heights’ Lee Stanek, also features the Highlanders’ Danielle Bodek and Abby Stanek, Bishop Carroll’s Gabby Gueguen and Becky Hogue, Central Cambria’s Breanne James, Taylor Swatsworth and Emily Wright, Blacklick Valley’s Jami Kish and Danielle Lesso, Portage’s Kelsie Spaid, and Forest Hills’ Amy Wiesheier.
“Following in the steps of Ariel, Janae and Bree is going to be awesome,” said Sedlock, referring to Northern Cambria graduates and former all-stars Ariel Rocco, Janae Dunchack and Brianna Kochinsky of the two-time state runner-up Colts program.
“They were so much fun to play with. They were such good players.
“They helped me to be better. Following in their footsteps is an honor.”
Other players who were selected to the team but are unable to participate include North Star’s Emily Lohr and Somerset’s Bits Barron and Brooke Spangler.
