BEDFORD —
Johnstown coach Tony Penna Jr. and his staff challenged the Trojans’ offensive and defensive lines prior to Friday’s LHAC game at Bedford.
After Johnstown fell behind by three points in the back-and-forth first quarter, the coach still had confidence the big boys would elevate their game.
The linemen did exactly that as Johnstown accumulated 410 yards of offense and scored 28 unanswered points in a 42-17 victory over the Bisons.
“This is a proud group of linemen and coaches,” Penna said. “We weren’t happy with how we played last week (in a comeback win over Somerset). We just dug in and said we need to play better. I challenged them before the game. I challenged them to dominate and told them they’d be the difference in the game.”
Johnstown trailed 17-14 after one quarter but the defense pitched a shutout the rest of the way as Alkwan Williams had double digit tackles and recorded his 450th career stop.
The offense also got on track.
“We really just had to dig deep and push forward. We just went to our strength, our speed and our discipline,” junior center Nick Subich said. “We’re really a close-knit group of guys as a line and we push through. We’ve made a lot of progress.
“This year we just kept improving and we don’t settle for just anything. We’ve stuck together. We’re close and that makes a difference.”
