Bishop Guilfoyle blanks Central Cambria

ALTOONA — Bishop Guilfoyle’s stock has been rising all season.

On Saturday night at Mansion Park, Central Cambria was the latest Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference team to find out just how good the Marauders really are.

“I am very impressed with this Guilfoyle team,” said Red Devils coach Sam Shutty after his team fell 33-0 to the Blair County squad. “They are very, very athletic. There is talent from the top down and they showed it tonight. I think our guys were a little bit shocked at the speed of these guys. They are fast.”

Central Cambria was limited to minus-1 yard of total offense in the first half and did not move into Bishop Guilfoyle territory until its first drive of the second half. At times, it seemed the Marauders knew what play was coming before it was run and kept the Red Devils scrambling.

“They controlled the line of scrimmage,” Shutty said. “Our guys were caught a little off guard. There are things that you can tell on film and there are things that you can’t tell on film and obviously the strength of the line and the guys, you can’t really get off of film. They were more than we could handle up front.”

The Marauders (6-1) were led by quarterback Pat Irwin who rushed for 109 yards on 14 carries and threw for 82 yards going 7 of 13.

The senior also scored three touchdowns. Cody Rossman added 94 yards on 12 carries and A.J. Kitt rushed for two scores.

“Offensively, we’ve been getting better each and every week,” Guilfoyle coach Justin Wheeler said. “Both sides of the ball did a great job tonight.

“Irwin is a great kid and a great football player and he’s a tremendous leader and we’ve kind of given him a lot of leniency on the field. We’ve allowed him some opportunities to make some reads and audibles and he has great vision. He’s like an extra coach on the field.”

The Marauders scored on their opening drive, marching nine plays on 58 yards with Irwin running in from the 1.

Guilfoyle’s next drive was even longer covering 63 yards on 14 plys and taking nearly eight minutes with Irwin again taking the sneak in from the 1.

The Marauders added two more touchdowns in the second quarter, an A.J. Kitt

4-yard run and a 10-yard Irwin dash to take a 27-0 lead at the half.

The Red Devils (1-6) were more successful moving the ball in the second half. Sophomore quarterback Will Seymour finished the game 8 for 14 passing for 89 yards with Brandon Long making three catches for 55 yards to lead the team.

“We stayed the course,” Shutty said. “At halftime, we settled down and got back on track to a degree. We still weren’t able to finish drives, but we moved the ball.”

Bishop Guilfoyle added a 3-yard Kitt run at the end of a 77-yard, nine-play drive in the third quarter to set the final.
