JOHNSTOWN —
After being upset by Central Cambria last week, Johnstown came out on a mission Friday night — get the bad taste of that loss out of their mouths.
It took the Trojans one drive to do just that.
Johnstown’s first drive of the game ended in a touchdown and it was just one of three first-quarter scores the Trojans put on visiting Bishop Carroll in a 42-15 pasting on senior night at Trojan Stadium.
“Our kids were hurting, their hearts were hurting,” said Johnstown coach Tony Penna, Jr. “They lost their undefeated season last week. They came out with a sense of urgency. Plus, it’s not too hard to get up for senior night. These guys have accomplished so much. It was their last time at Trojan Stadium. It really meant a lot to them.”
The Trojans (7-1 overall) set the tone early. On the first drive of the game, running back Javon Vuckovich broke loose for 40-yard touchdown run with less than three minutes gone. The 40-yard burst made up for a 49-yard score that was called back due to a holding penalty. Nonetheless, Johnstown’s first drive covered 59 yards in five plays and took 2:51 off the clock. A Gervon Simon two-point coversion run made it 8-0.
Bishop Carroll (1-7 overall) showed some fight on its first drive as Josh Barzdo broke off a 55-yard run to set the Huskies up in the red zone. However, the drive stalled and they had to settle for a Michael Pyo 31-yard field goal that cut the Johnstown lead to 8-3.
Johnstown took command of the game moments later. After the Trojans returned the kickoff to their own 41-yard line, Vuckovich scored again — this time from 59 yards away. He broke through Bishop Carroll’s front four and plowed over would-be tacklers on his way to the end zone. Julian Ter Horst tacked on the extra point and the Trojan lead swelled to 15-3 with 6:24 left in the first quarter.
On their next drive, the Trojans went to the air. Simon completed a pair of passes on the drive, both to Daquan Minter. The first pass went for 31 yards and the second for 35. Odum rushed for 12 yards to the Huskies’ 1-yard line and Simon punched it in to make it 21-3 with 25 seconds left in the opening quarter.
It was a tough 12 minutes for the Huskies.
“They played hard and made a lot of big plays,” said Bishop Carroll coach Craig Sponsky. “We were in position at times and they made us miss. They were much more effective this week than they were last week.”
