JOHNSTOWN —
Martella’s Pharmacy had the complete package in a 6-2 victory over the first-place Berkley Hills Renegades on Wednesday.
Left-hander Kyle Zambanini efficiently mowed through the Renegades lineup, facing 19 hitters, only one over the minimum in six shutout innings in the early AAABA League contest at Point Stadium.
Third-place Martella’s played error-free defense and turned a 4-6-3 double play in the fourth inning.
The offense produced a three-hit night by Tony Strasiser, a double by Matt McMillen and a two-run triple by No. 9 batter Dillon Boyer to cap a 10-pitch at-bat.
“We need all the momentum we can get going into the playoffs and trying to get into the tournament,” Zambanini said. “We want to keep rolling. Everyone is playing great. We’re hitting the ball great. The pitching is coming around. It’s awesome.”
Martella’s (19-12) won its fifth consecutive game and moved within two games of the Renegades (21-10) with five games remaining. Second-place Delweld was within one-half game of first entering Wednesday’s late game against Laurel Auto Group.
“Our situation right now, I’m a little disappointed in our hitting,” Renegades manager Larry McCabe said. “We’re in a slump. When you’re not scoring runs and you’re not getting that timely hit and you’re not moving runners up, those things come back to bite you.
“We won 2-0 on Sunday. We were shut out two games in a row. Offensively we’re in a funk, but I think we’re going to be OK. This team is going to battle out of it.”
Renegades right-hander Ben Weimer and Zambanini matched each other with three scoreless innings.
“I was just trying to throw as many strikes as I could, let them hit the ball and rely on my defense,” Zambanini said.
Martella’s capitalized on a pair of Renegades’ miscues to tally single runs in both the fourth and fifth.
McMillen led off the fourth with a double. Strasiser singled, putting runners on the corners.
Strasiser broke for second on a steal attempt. Renegades second baseman Dylin Brooks cut off the throw from catcher Dan Gray just behind the pitcher’s mound in order to prevent McMillen from scoring.
McMillen still took off for the plate. Brooks’ throw beat him but was low, allowing McMillen to score.
In the fifth, Boyer was hit by a pitch and moved to third on Dan Abbenante’s single. Abbenante stole second. Jesse Cooper lined out to shortstop Matt Kastelic, who attempted to double up Abbenante at second, but the toss got away, allowing Boyer to score.
“I thought Benny threw a really good game,” McCabe said of Weimer. “Truthfully, a 2-0 score, and both runs scored on errors.
“We had the perfect play call and we had the guy out at home. We didn’t make a good throw. We had the line drive where we had a chance for a double play and we just made the bad flip. But we were still in the ballgame.”
Martella’s added four runs in the sixth, an inning highlighted by Boyer’s two-run triple down the right field line after he had fouled off five pitches with a 2-2 count.
“That was the at-bat of the season for us,” Martella’s manager Chris Pfeil said. “That was by far the best approach we’ve had. We talked to the guys about battling. He battled and battled. That gave us the cushion we needed.”
Thanks to Zambanini’s work through six innings, the margin was enough.
“Kyle did his job,” Pfeil said. “He came out and hit his spots. When he does that he keeps people off balance. His breaking stuff was working and he slides that fastball in past you. We played pretty good defense behind him. When you execute defensively you have a real good chance to win.”
Reliever Tyler Swarmer allowed a bloop single by the Renegades Brooks and then retired two batters before walking four straight to allow two runs in the top of the seventh.
“Tyler is coming back for us and we’re trying to get him some innings to get him ready for the playoffs,” Pfeil said. “He just lost his release point. But he was able to bear down and get the ground ball to get us out of it.”
