Boys

Bishop Carroll 57

Westmont Hilltop 55


EBENSBURG – Ryan Lauer scored 24 points and Scott Ranck added 17 to help Bishop Carroll hand Westmont Hilltop its first loss of the season in a Laurel Highlands nonsection game on Wednesday.

Marcus Lee added nine rebounds for the Huskies (4-2).

Quentin Brandon led the Hilltoppers (7-1) with 18 points, while teammate Stephen Flick finished with 14.

Shade 40

Berlin Brothersvalley 38


BERLIN – Nash Walker’s 10 points led a balanced Shade attack as the Panthers rallied from a five-point deficit in the fourth to edge Berlin in a WestPAC South contest.

Jacob Snyder’s 12 points led the Mountaineers, who also received 10 points from Drew Glotfelty.

North Star 53

Blacklick Valley 52


NANTY GLO – Cory Bloom connected on a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2 seconds remaining as the Cougars stunned Blacklick Valley. Bloom netted a team-high 16 points for North Star with Beau Soberdash supplying 14 points and Brandon Smith pouring in 10.

The Vikings’ Dalton Cesarz posted a game-best 21 points with Johnny Sheesley’s 13 points and another 12 from Josh Barzdo supporting the Blacklick Valley cause.

Bishop McCort 65

Cambria Heights 41


PATTON – The Crimson Crushers pulled away in the middle frames, outscoring Cambria Heights 39-14 in that span, on their way to a conference win. Billy Hipp’s 16 points led Bishop McCort while teammate Jerqual Wilson pitched in 15 points.

Isaac Vescovi’s 14 points led the way for the Highlanders, who led 16-11 after a period.

Greater Johnstown 65 Central Cambria 39

EBENSBURG – The Trojans’ Alkwan Williams scored 20 points with teammates Dwight Andrews and Mark Watson scoring 19 and 13 points, respectively, in a Laurel Highlands nonsection win over the Red Devils.

Zach Woodley posted 14 points to top the hosts, who received 11 points from Ed Maruca and 10 more from Collin Russell.  

Conemaugh Valley 69 Windber 48

Dalton Uncapher scored a game-high 23 points to lead a trio of Conemaugh Valley double-digit scorers in a WestPAC North win over visiting Windber.

Hunter Furman added 15 points for the Blue Jays (6-2), who also got 12 points from Brandon Kendera.

Dan Tomlinson topped the Ramblers with 14 points while Tyler Zabrucky provided 11.

Forest Hills 58, Richland 51

SIDMAN – Justin Smith and Neil Wysocki scored 12 points apiece and Cody Moss added 11 to lead Forest Hills to a win over visiting Richland in Laurel Highlands nonsection action.

The Rams’ Kyle Flick led all scorers with 23 points.

Penn Cambria 68

Somerset 57


CRESSON – A.J. Leahey scored 30 points, collected 16 rebounds and blocked eight shots as the Panthers toppled visiting Somerset. Joel Myers supplied 14 points off the bench in the win.

The Golden Eagles’ Jake Close tallied 16 points with help coming from Eddie Buck (14 points) and Justin Harshberger (12 points).  

Conemaugh Township 72 Portage 48

PORTAGE – Conemaugh Township tore out to a 25-7 lead after the first quarter on its way to a WestPAC North road win over Portage.

The Indians (5-2) were led by 16 points from Dillon Boyer while Eric Ewing chipped in 13 and Grant Speigle added 12.

Jake Bryja scored a game-high 21 points for the Mustangs (3-4), who also got 18 points from Troy Scoran.

Shanksville 67

Meyersdale 38


SHANKSVILLE – Carter Slade scored 13 points to help lead Shanksville-Stonycreek to a WestPAC South win over visiting Meyersdale.

Jordan Wilt and Jake Duppstadt added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Vikings (6-2).

Justin Donaldson topped the Red Raiders (3-6) with 12 points.

Girls

Ligonier Valley 43

Penns Manor 34


CLYMER – Maddy Grimm had a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds then added five steals, four assists and two blocked shots as Ligonier Valley picked up a road win over Penns Manor in the Heritage Conference.

Kristen Gabelt also had a double-double for the Rams (7-1) with 11 points and 12 rebounds in addition to two steals and an assist.

Krista Gillo topped all scorers with 16 points for the Comets (6-3) while teammate Amber Mattis chipped in 12.

United 39, Purchase Line 17

ARMAGH – The Lions held the Red Dragons to only four points in the first half and gritted out a home victory. Eden Bloom’s 11 points led the way for United, which received nine rebounds from Kennedy Fletcher.

Julie Snyder yanked down eight boards while Samantha McGaha collected seven rebounds.

Cassie Brocious’ 12 points boosted the Red Dragons.

    The AAABA League opens on Tuesday at Point Stadium with two new, but familiar managers, a new but familiar sponsor, an expanded interleague schedule and two new franchises committed to the 2013 season.
    A lot of activity took place during the offseason, including the AAABA national committee’s vote to expand the age limit to 21 years old beginning in 2013.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.

    Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record.

    Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
    Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever.
