Central Cambria girls win big at cross country championships

HERSHEY — The Central Cambria girls were big winners during Saturday’s PIAA cross country championships, which were held at Parkview Cross Country Course.

Red Devils senior Alyssa Brandis placed second in the girls Class A final in a time of 19:42. Kennedy Weisner, a junior from Elk County Catholic, won with a time of 18:29, a pace of 5:57 per mile.

Brandis’ performance caps a strong senior season.

In addition to her PIAA silver medal, Brandis won District 6 and Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference championships this fall.

Her performance helped Central Cambria to an impressive third-place finish in the team standings.

The Red Devils finished with 129 points. Elk Lake won the team title with 66 points and West Middlesex placed second with 100 points.

Penn Cambria finished seventh with 179 points. Sophomore Arlee Simendinger paced the Panthers and her time of 20:33 was good for 20th place and a spot on the medals podium.

Central Cambria freshman Hannah Swope placed 33rd in 21:04. Jordan Hayward (21L:18), Jackie Bracken (21:59), Olivia Lipnic (22:18), Laken McKeel (23:34) and Katie Bracken (23:49) also ran for the Red Devils.

Sara Clauto (21:25), Kaitlyn McGarry (22:03), Emily Roberts (22:09), Danielle Pompa (22:26), Sarah Roberts (23:11) and Shelly Pompa (23:22) contributed to Penn Cambria’s seventh-place finish.

In girls Class AA, Somerset’s Haylee Rohrer placed 37th in 20:17 and the Golden Eagles were 18th in the team standings.

The Westmont boys placed 12th in Class A, followed by Richland at 16th.

Junior Kevin Dailey was the Hilltoppers’ top finisher as he placed 43rd in 17:33. Nick Marx led Richland with a time of 17:58, good fo 79th place.

In Class AA boys, Bedford freshman William Kachman placed 30th in 17:07 and Somerset placed 16th in the team standings. The Golden Eagles were led by Nick Bastian (17:49).
