North Star shuts down Shade

BOSWELL — In the first round of the PIAA District 5 Class A playoffs, the North Star Cougars hosted the Shade Panthers in a Week 6 rematch.

The game started off in North Star’s favor, and the Cougars won by the final score 21-0.

The scoring started early in the first quarter, when Shade quarterback Cody Kiser was picked off by North Star linebacker Levi Albright, and took the ball back 35 yards for the Cougars score. Kicker Brantley Rice’s extra point attempt was successful, and the Cougars led 7-0 with 5:32 left in the first quarter.

Midway through the second quarter, the North Star offense drove the ball down to the Panthers’ 5-yard line, when running back Shawn Costas scored on the 5-yard rushing attempt. Rice missed the extra point attempt, and the Cougars (9-2) extended their lead to 13-0 with 2:17 left in the first half.

With 1:02 left in the first half, Brantley Rice took a pitch from Berkebile, and threw the ball down the field connecting with receiver Tony Strasiser for the 44-yard Cougars’ touchdown. The offense converted on the two-point conversion attempt, and North Star led 21-0 going into halftime.

In the second half, neither team’s defense gave up any ground. The Cougars advance to play Northern Bedford next Friday night.

“Northern Bedford’s obviously the top seed, they have a great team and we’ll have to bring our A game,” said Cougars head coach Stacy Schmitt.

“We played hard, we just couldn’t sustain anything offensively,” said Panthers co-coach Don Fyfe. “We had a great year. We’re upset now, but we had a great season.”

Shade finished 6-5.
