McQuillen fails to reach Olympics

EUGENE, Ore. — Karlee McQuillen’s hope of qualifying for the Olympics came up short of her goal.

The Westmont Hilltop and Penn State University graduate threw the javelin in the finals at the U.S. Track and Field Trials at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus on Sunday.

The day got off to a rough start as McQuillen fouled on her first attempt.

She came back with a toss of 169 feet, 2 inches on her second attempt, then had her best throw of the day, 173-8, on her third toss.

At that point, McQuillen was ninth among the dozen competitors and was eliminated.

The top eight remaining throwers advanced to battle for the three spots.

Brittany Borman won the javelin at the U.S. track trials with a throw of 201-9, Kara Patterson was second at 196-2, and Kimberly Hamilton finished third with a throw of 190-5.

Hamilton does not have the Olympic “A” standard of 200-1 this season to make the U.S. team for the London Games, so the third spot on the team went to fourth-place finisher, Rachel Yurkovich.

McQuillen, who had a personal best throw of 182-10 on Friday in the preliminaries, graduated from Penn State with a degree in health policy and administration in 2011.

She earned a bronze medal in the NCAA Division I Championship event in 2010 and finished in the top 10 at nationals during all four of her seasons.

She was a Big Ten champion and All-American.

The former Hilltopper was also a two-time state champion in the javelin.

Wallace Spearmon won the 200 meters at trials in 19.82 seconds to earn a spot on the Olympic team.

In other events on Sunday, defending outdoor champion Lashinda Demus won the women’s 400 hurdles in 53.98, and will be joined by runner-up Georganne Moline and third-place finisher T’Erea Brown on the Olympic team.

On the men’s side, Michael Tinsley won the 400 hurdles in 48.33, besting reigning Olympic champion Angelo Taylor and defending Olympic silver medalist Kerron Clement.

Bershawn Jackson, the defending Olympic bronze medalist, fell into the finish but finished fourth.

Leo Manzano won the men’s 1,500 in 3:35.75, followed by former Oregon Ducks teammates Matthew Centrowitz and Andrew Wheating.

Morgan Uceny won the women’s 1,500 in 4:04.59, earning a place on the team with runner-up Shannon Rowbury and third-place finisher Jenny Simpson.

Simpson has the American record in the 3,000 steeplechase, but switched to the 1,500 and is the reigning world champion in the event.

Brittney Reese won her fifth straight U.S. title in the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 51⁄2 inches.

The two-time world champion will be joined in London by runner-up Chelsea Hayes and Janay DeLoach.

Brittany Borman won the javelin with a throw of 201-9. Kara Patterson was second at 196-2, but third-place finisher Kimberly Hamilton did not have the Olympic “A” standard need to qualify for the games and the spot on the U.S. team went to fourth-place finisher Rachel Yurkovich.

Earlier in the day, Maria Michta won the 20,000-meter race walk in 1:34:53.33 for the lone spot on the team in the event, because no one had the “A” standard.
