BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Northern Cambria 3 Bishop Guilfoyle 0


NORTHERN CAMBRIA – In their inaugural year of competition, the Northern Cambria boys won their home opener on Monday night against Bishop Guilfoyle.

The Colts, who improved to 2-0 overall, downed the Marauders 25-19, 25-16, 25-14.

SOFTBALL

Rockwood 7 Shanksville 2


ROCKWOOD – Rockwood came away with a victory over visiting Shanksville-Stonycreek in a pitchers’ dual on a chilly Monday afternoon.

The Rockets’ Samantha Emert struck out 12 in the two-hit win while the Vikings’ Kayla Stockenus fanned 11 in the loss.

Hannah Holt delivered a pair of two-out singles to drive in four of Rockwood’s runs while teammate Leah Clay added two hits and scored twice. Santana Bowman also plated two runs.

Lauren Wilson had a hit and scored a run while Abby Duppstadt had the other hit and drove in a run for Shanksville.

Marion Center 25 United 0 (3)

ARMAGH – Kiersten Gromley threw a three-inning no-hitter, striking out eight, and got plenty of run support from her teammates in Marion Center’s Heritage Conference win at United.

Amy Fairman and Heidi Peterson each went 3 for 3 with Fairman providing a triple for the Stingers, who also got doubles from Nicole Miloser, Brooke Fairman, Michelle Robinson and Kristy Dotts.

Northern Cambria 7 Homer-Center 2

NORTHERN CAMBRIA – Bre Sabella, Giana Butterworth and Shawna Serafin each had two hits for Northern Cambria in a victory over visiting Homer-Center.

Sabella homered while Butterworth had two doubles, scored a run and drove in another. Serafin belted a double and drove in a run for the unbeaten Colts (2-0).

Melissa Jones supplied two hits and scored a run for the Wildcats.

BASEBALL

Bishop Carroll 11 Johnstown 3


REVLOC – Four players delivered two hits apiece for Bishop Carroll in an opening-day win over visiting Greater Johnstown.

Dylan Link, Drew McCabe, Taylor Makin and winning pitcher Ryan Woo each had two hits for the Huskies.

Salisbury 17, Paw Paw 0 (5)

PAW PAW, W.Va. – Geoff Garlitz, Ryan Vogt and Alex Beiler combined to strike out 11 batters in five innings as Salisbury-Elk Lick beat Paw Paw.

Garlitz pitched the first three innings for the victory, allowing three hits, before Vogt and Beiler each followed by striking out the side in order.

The Elks (1-0) got a bases-loaded double from Steven Yoder in the first and a two-run homer from Garlitz, who went 2 for 4, in the third.

Nathan Lowery had two hits, including a double.

Northern Cambria 11, United 10

ARMAGH – Joel Polites had three hits to lead Northern Cambria to a road win over United in the season opener for both squads.

The Lions got a double, a triple and three RBIs from Kody Oliver.

BOWLING

NEC honors Westmont grad


ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. – Kutztown junior Kayla Jones, a Westmont Hilltop graduate, earned Northeast Conference first-team honors at the league championships on Saturday.

Jones had a 21.2 baker frame average on the lanes. She finished the regular season as the highest average for Kutztown for the third year in a row, this time with a 199.1.

Kutztown, which is ranked seventh nationally, will find out if it gets a chance to compete for a national title when the selections are broadcast live on NCAA.com on Wednesday. The Golden Bears (97-33) also have qualified for the USBC Nations in Georgia



BASKETBALL

McCort to host CYO tournament


The Altoona-Johnstown Diocese has released the pairings for the Pennsylvania State Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) boys’ grade-school tournament, which will be held at Bishop McCort Catholic High School.

The tournament will be held April 8-10 with four games each day at Bishop McCort.

This year’s competing teams include All Saints Catholic (Altoona-Johnstown), Aquinas Academy (Greensburg), St. Mary Glenshaw (Pittsburgh), Seton School (Erie), St. Andrew Catholic (Philadelphia), St. Claire/St. Paul Catholic (Scranton), St. Thomas More Catholic (Allentown) and St. Theresa Catholic (Harrisburg).

    There were times earlier in his career when James McDonald would run into trouble and innings would slow to a crawl. Even worse, runners would disappear, and not in a good way.

    The AAABA League opens on Tuesday at Point Stadium with two new, but familiar managers, a new but familiar sponsor, an expanded interleague schedule and two new franchises committed to the 2013 season.
    A lot of activity took place during the offseason, including the AAABA national committee’s vote to expand the age limit to 21 years old beginning in 2013.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.

    Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record.

    Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
    Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever.
