Scholastic basketball in brief

GIRLS

Johnstown 50, Somerset 49


SOMERSET - Trailing by a point with 12.6 seconds remaining, Tynesha Smith scored for Johnstown to give the Trojans a one-point win on Monday night.

Smith finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds while teammate Chartice Wyatt added 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

Brooke Spangler topped the Golden Eagles scoring with 13 points and Sydney Geary added 12.

Conemaugh Township 43, Ferndale 25

DAVIDSVILLE – Twins Lyndy and Carly Baer scored 10 points apiece to lead host Conemaugh Township past Ferndale.

Kelsie Smith had five assists, four steals and a pair of blocks for the Indians (3-1) while Stephanie Summits had nine rebounds.

Gabby Kull led Ferndale (0-4) with 13 points.

Bishop Guilfoyle 72, Penn Cambria 30

CRESSON – Three Bishop Guilfoyle players scored in double figures led by Halee Adams with 29 points, as the Marauders routed host Penn Cambria.

Kelsey Livoti added 12 points and Devin Stessney had 10 for Guilfoyle while Brianna Mulhearn topped the Panthers with six points.

Central Cambria 59, Bishop Carroll 46

EBENSBURG - Three Central Cambria players scored in double figures led by Emily Wright with 17 points as the Red Devils downed town rival Bishop Carroll.

Taylor Swatsworth had 15 points and Breanne James had 11 for Central Cambria.

Dani Link topped all scorers with 18 points for the Huskies, who also got 12 points from Krista Krug.

Richland 50, Bedford 14

Katie Gehlmann led all scorers with 21 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had eight steals as Richland crushed visiting Bedford.

Sarah Pfeil added 15 points for the Rams, who also got 10 points and eight rebounds from Kaija Holtzman.

Blacklick Valley 46, Conemaugh Valley 38

Danielle Lesso scored a game-high 21 points and Jami Kish added 10 as Blacklick Valley downed host Conemaugh Valley.

The Blue Jays, who struggled from the free-throw line (2 of 13), got 17 points from Jen Percinsky and 12 rebounds from Jamie Cekada.

Forest Hills 64, Cambria Heights 34

SIDMAN – Becky Bard had 12 points, Jess DiFlauro had 11 rebounds and Casey Gallaher added seven steals as Forest Hills routed visiting Cambria Heights to remain unbeaten (4-0).

Shade 87, Turkeyfoot Valley 54

CONFLUENCE – Chelsey Pongrac fell one assist short of a triple-double in Shade’s victory at Turkeyfoot Valley.

Pongrac had 21 points, 14 steals and nine assists. Becca Muha also had a double-double with 31 points and 18 rebounds for the Panthers (1-1). Emily Gibbons had 10 points and Aubrey Polochak grabbed 11 rebounds.

Kami Koscheck paced the Rams (0-1) with 21 points while Brittany Diehl added 14.

Windber 61, North Star 45

WINDBER – Jill Penatzer helped host Windber rally from a one-point halftime deficit for a victory over rival North Star.

Penatzer scored 18 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Cheyenne Feathers had four of Windber’s eight 3-pointers and finished with 13 points for the Ramblers (2-1). Rachel Lovely grabbed seven rebounds and five steals.

Bailley Caviness paced North Star (1-3) with 14 points.

Boys

Salisbury 66, Ferndale 60


Ryan Vogt scored 32 points to lead unbeaten Salisbury-Elk Lick past host Ferndale.

Alex Beiler added 18 points for the Elks (4-0) while Brandon Miller had a dozen.

Nate Davidson’s 21 points led Ferndale (0-3). Brady Gates and Patrick Palmer each scored 12 points while Dave Horvath grabbed 13 rebounds.

Forest Hills 74, Cambria Heights 45

PATTON – Luke Gallaher scored 24 points and Tanner Thomas added 22 to lead Forest Hills (2-1).

Zach Prohonic went 12 for 14 from the free-throw line to pace Cambria Heights (1-4).

Richland 70, Bedford 47

BEDFORD – Dereck Malzi scored 32 points and had 11 rebounds as Richland beat Bedford.

Travis Neil had 14 points for the Rams (3-1) while Alex Ritenour had six assists.

Marcus Shippey led Bedford with 12 points while Ryan Salts added 10.

Northern Cambria 76, Penns Manor 47

NORTHERN CAMBRIA – Jeff Hogan had a double-double to lead five Northern Cambria players in double figures.

Hogan had 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Colts (2-1). Derek Bearer had a game-high 17 points while Tony Rocco had 15. Andy Hancharik and Adam Polites each scored 11.

Aric Gresko and Dan Ferens each had 10 for Penns Manor (1-3).

Johnstown 82, Somerset 52

Quentin Brandon scored a game-high 20 points, including four 3-pointers as Johnstown blasted visiting Somerset to remain undefeated (4-0).

Isaiah Haselrig added 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Trojans, who also got 13 points and 17 rebounds from Alkwan Williams and 15 assists from Mark Watson.

The Golden Eagles got 18 points from Brent Barron and 11 points from Jake Close.

  • james throws Pirates pick up fourth straight victory

    There were times earlier in his career when James McDonald would run into trouble and innings would slow to a crawl. Even worse, runners would disappear, and not in a good way.
    Too much thinking. Not enough attacking.

    The AAABA League opens on Tuesday at Point Stadium with two new, but familiar managers, a new but familiar sponsor, an expanded interleague schedule and two new franchises committed to the 2013 season.
    A lot of activity took place during the offseason, including the AAABA national committee’s vote to expand the age limit to 21 years old beginning in 2013.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.

    Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record.

    Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
    Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever.
