Britcher helps Dukes triumph
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Alex Gensler scored 14 points and Westmont Hilltop graduate Kelly Britcher added 13 off the bench as the Duquesne women’s basketball team beat host George Washington 61-53 on Wednesday night.
Siembak’s jersey will be retired
Greater Johnstown High School graduate Becky Siembak’s No. 42 jersey will be retired tonight during the Trojans girls basketball team’s game against visiting Westmont Hilltop.
Siembak’s number originally was to be retired a week ago, but that game against United was postponed by inclement weather.
Siembak scored 1,733 points and had 1,325 rebounds for the Lady Trojans before graduating in 2000.
Her point total is the most at Johnstown in boys or girls basketball.
St. Francis nips Sacred Heart
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Umar Shannon scored a career-high 30 points and St. Francis outlasted Sacred Heart 88-86 in overtime on Thursday night.
The Red Flash (7-13, 5-4 Northeast Conference) have won five in a row after losing 11 straight and snapped a 15-game road losing streak dating back to last season.
St. Francis overcame a 55-45 deficit with 14:41 left to tie it at 66 with 5:35 to go.
The Red Flash led by four twice in the last 1:09 of regulation, but Shane Gibson, who paced the Pioneers with 22 points, made a three-point play with 15 seconds left to tie it at 77.
Scott Eatherton’s layup and Shannon’s three-point play opened overtime and St. Francis built an 84-77 lead before Sacred Heart got to 87-86 with 8 seconds to go on Jerrell Thompson’s layup.
Jon Taylor sealed the win with a free throw with 2 seconds left.
Thompson added 21 points for the Pioneers (8-12, 3-6).
HOCKEY
ECHL all-stars beat Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Stockton rookie Mark Arcobello scored a hat trick and was named MVP as the ECHL All-Stars defeated the host Bakersfield Condors 9-3 on Wednesday in front of 7,392 fans at Rabobank Arena in the 19th annual ECHL All-Star Classic.
Arcobello was the eighth player in All-Star Classic history to score at least three goals in one game.
Andy MacIntyre holds the record with four goals in the 1998 All-Star Game.
Wheeling Nailers goaltender Patrick Killeen stopped seven of eight shots he faced in the third period. Nailers rookie forward Ben Street also participated in the game. The Nailers will play 10 regular-season games at Cambria County War Memorial Arena this season, with the next date set for Sunday.
WRESTLING
UPJ invites alumni to match
The Pitt-Johnstown wrestling team, ranked 12th in the nation in Division II, will celebrate Alumni Night and put its 11-1 record on the line against No. 17 Ashland at
7 p.m. tonight at the UPJ Sports Center. Prior to the match, Pitt-Johnstown will recognize the wrestling alumni in attendance.
The Mountain Cats are coming off of a 5-0 showing at last weekend’s East Coast Duals at UNC-Pembroke. Pitt-Johnstown defeated No. 4 Newberry 19-18 to open the duals, before closing them with a 31-10 victory over No. 6 UNC-Pembroke.
In Saturday’s four matches, the Mountain Cats won 34 of the 40 bouts and outscored their opponents 145-22.

Pirates pick up fourth straight victory
There were times earlier in his career when James McDonald would run into trouble and innings would slow to a crawl. Even worse, runners would disappear, and not in a good way.

AAABA League will open after busy offseason
The AAABA League opens on Tuesday at Point Stadium with two new, but familiar managers, a new but familiar sponsor, an expanded interleague schedule and two new franchises committed to the 2013 season.
A lot of activity took place during the offseason, including the AAABA national committee’s vote to expand the age limit to 21 years old beginning in 2013. -

Richland's Lumley settles for pair of silver medals
Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
The Richland senior had state record jumps twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
1¾ inches.
Defending state champion, second-seeded junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½. -
Ridge’s Dull takes second with school-record time
Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record. -
Hit batsman lifts Pirates over Cubs
Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever. -
Generals return to defeat Sting
It’s been a dramatic month for the Johnstown Generals.
