Local basketball briefs 12/15/11

Boys

Con. Twp. 76, Blacklick 46


DAVIDSVILLE – Ten different Indians scored during a 29-point third quarter as Conemaugh Township downed Blacklick Valley.

Grant Speigle and Dillon Boyer each scored 17 points to pace the Indians, who held a 34-18 edge in rebounding over the Vikings. Dan Zambanini led Conemaugh Township with nine boards.

Johnny Sheesley scored 19 points while Blacklick Valley teammate Dalton Cesarz added 14 points.

Con. Valley 66, Ferndale 24

Nick Roberts led a quartet of double-figure scorers with 14 points as Conemaugh Valley pasted visiting Ferndale. Hunter Furman tallied 13 points in the win while Brandon Kendera scored 12 and Dalton Uncapher 11.

The Yellow Jackets’ Chad Eisenhuth scored 11 points.  

Johnstown 71, B. Carroll 46

Johnstown won its season opener in impressive fashion.

The Trojans (1-0) opened up a huge 40-18 halftime lead and cruised to an easy win over Bishop Carroll at Greater Johnstown High School.

The Trojans landed three players in double figures. Phillip Madison led the way with 14 points. Alkwan Williams added 11 and Mark Watson scored 10 for the winners. The Huskies had a pair of players reach double digits. Scott Ranck scored 11 points, as did Brandon Martinazzi.

Bishop Carroll tried to dig its way out of the hole in the third quarter, outscoring Johnstown, 15-14.

McCort 65, Penn Cambria 51

Billy Hipp scored a game-high 23 points, while teammates Nemo Trexler and Jordan Spangler added 17 and 13, respectively, to lead the Crushers.

A.J. Leahey led the Panthers with 18 points.

Portage 51, North Star 38

PORTAGE – The Mustangs were spurred by Jake Bryja’s 26 points and

14 rebounds as they raced past North Star.

Portage built a 20-6 lead after a quarter on its way to the win. Jesse Kreutzberger scored 10 points in the win.  

Guilfoyle 59, Richland 55

Brandon Drenning scored 20 points to lead the visiting Marauders. Pat Irwin added 12 for Bishop Guilfoyle.

Kyle Flick and Luke Shertzer scored 16 points apiece for Richland.

Shanksville 67, Shade 60

CAIRNBROOK – A 22-14 scoring edge in the second quarter buoyed the Vikings to victory over host Shade. Ryan Platt’s

18 points topped Shanksville-Stonycreek while teammates Jake Duppstadt and Nick Bittner scored 15 and 10, respectively.

The Panthers’ Wade Walker scored a game-high 27 points and tallied 16 rebounds while Nash Walker poured in 11 points.

Somerset 88, C. Heights 46

SOMERSET – Somerset made quick work of Cambria Heights.

Justin Harshbarger and Brent Barron led Somerset with 19 points apiece. They were the lone Eagles to reach double digits.

The Eagles opened up a big 23-9 first-quarter lead and cruised from there. By the intermission, it was 50-20 in favor of Somerset.

The Eagles improved to 3-0 with the win. Cambria Heights fell to 1-2 with the loss.

Isaac Vescovi led Cambria Heights with 18 points.

Westmont 66, C. Cambria 42

The Hilltoppers gave coach Dave Roman Jr. his 250th win as they dispatched visiting Central Cambria in LHAC action.

Quentin Brandon had 22 points and 10 boards to boost Westmont Hilltop, which received 13 points from Brady Hamer, a dozen points from Stephen Flick and 10 points from Joe Glennon.

Zach Woodley’s 15 points led the way for Central Cambria.

Girls

Northern Cambria 50, Purchase Line 43


NORTHERN CAMBRIA – Gabby Pizur scored 19 points and Ashley Delfonso and Jenna Lecorchick scored 10 apiece to lead the Colts.

Casie Brocious scored a game-high 22 for Purchase Line.

Rockwood 44, Salisbury 26

ROCKWOOD – Rockwood jumped out to a 12-4 first-quarter lead and never looked back in an 18-point win over visiting Salisbury-Elk Lick.

The Rockets landed three players in double figures.

Sara Emert led the way with 14, while Kelsey Zerfoss (12) and Katie Miller (10) also chipped in. Salisbury-Elk Lick had just one player in double digits.

Alayna Hershberger led all scorers with 16 points.

After taking an eight-point lead in the first quarter, Rockwood blew the game open by halftime, taking a 28-9 lead at the intermission.

With the win, the Rockets improved to 2-2. The Elks fell to 1-1.

Saltsburg 45, United 36

SALTSBURG – Saltsburg trailed by a point at the end of the first quarter, but turned it on over the final 24 minutes of play to defeat visiting United.

Saltsburg (1-1) won the game with balanced scoring. In fact, just one player

– Lisa Prenni – hit double digits, scoring 10 points. United was led by Eden Bloom, who scored 16.

United fell to 0-2 with the loss.

    There were times earlier in his career when James McDonald would run into trouble and innings would slow to a crawl. Even worse, runners would disappear, and not in a good way.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.

    Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record.

    Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
    Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever.
